Rhizophora mangte (mangrove rouge]
Rhizophora mangte est un arbre de taille petite à moyenne allant
de 10 à 20 m de hauteur et de 10 à 30 cm de diamètre à hauteur
de poitrine. Cependant, il peut dépasser 10 m de hauteur et
70 cm de diamètre à hauteur de poitrine sur les sites productifs
(Jimenez, 19851. Il pousse généralement au bord de l'eau et est
facilement identifiable à ses racines enchevêtrées, rougeâtres.

Avicennia germinans mangrove noire]
Avicennia germinans se caractérise par ses nombreuses
excroissances appelées pneumatophores, qui ressemblent à
des doigts et qui sortent du sol autour du tronc de l'arbre ; un
Avicennia de 3 m de haut peut avoir 10 000 pneumatophores
ITan, 20011. Ces espèces ont tendance à occuper des terrains
légèrement plus élevées à l'intérieur des terres que la
mangrove rouge.

Laguncularia racemosa Imangrove blanche]
Laguncularia racemosa n'a pas de racines aériennes visibles et
est plus facilement identifiable par ses feuilles. Celles-ci sont
de forme elliptique, jaune-vert clair, et ont deux glandes
caractéristiques à la base de la feuille sur la jointure de la tige.
Cette espèce occupe des zones plus élevées sur les plateaux
intérieures que les mangroves rouges ou noires.

Conocarpus erectus IBouton de boisl
Conocarpus erectus appartient à la famille de la mangrove
blanche. Cette espèce tient son nom de ses fleurs denses et
arrondies qui poussent en grappes et ressemblent à des boutons ;
le fruit est vert violacé et arrondi en forme de cône ILaw, FRC-431.
Acrostichum aureum (Fougère en cuir d'or)
Une fougère droite, poussant jusqu'à 1,5 m de haut, avec une
petite apparence broussailleuse. Elle a des racines fibreuses
typiques comme celles des fougères sans aucune racine
aérienne. La fronde est simple, jusqu'à 1 m de long et
4 cm de large, iso bilatérale, mi veine distincte et veine
réticulée, fine entière, émoussée, vert et jaune à maturité avec
une limbe glabre, coriace et nervure saillante d'un cote. Les
frondes mûres deviennent des sporophyllous, les spoprangia
diffus à abaxial font surface, sporangia mélange sur les deux
côtés de la tige mi-veinée, sporangia brun, globose supérieur
pédoncule, IMangroves of India, 19981.
Nypa fruticans IMangrove/Nypa Palm]
Un palmier qui pousse dans la boue meuble, habituellement où
l'eau est plus calme, mais où il y a un afflux régulier de limon
d'eau douce et de nutritiment. On le trouve à l'intérieur des
terres, aussi loin que la marée peut déposer les graines
flottantes du palmier. Il tolère une inondation peu fréquente, du
moment que le sol ne reste pas sec trop longtemps. Les tiges
rampantes horizontales stabilisent les berges et empêchent
l'érosion du sol (Tan, 2001 ; Missouri Botanical Garden, 19961.
Rhizophora racemosa (Mangrove rougel
Rhizophora racemosa est plus rare que R. mangte. La
distribution semble moins étendue, principalement aux
estuaires équatoriaux des plus grands systèmes de fleuve avec
des courants d'eau douce plus continus [Duke, 2006]. C'est te
colon principal dans les réseaux de lagunes ouvertes le long
du littoral du Ghana, du Nigeria, du Cameroun, de la Guinée
équatoriale, du Gabon, de la République démocratique du
Congo et de l'Angola (WWF, 20011.
Rhizophora harrisonii (Mangrove rouge]
Le taxon est considéré comme l'hybride putatif de R. mangte et
R. racemosa. Rhizophora harrisonii comme l'hybride apparent
de R. mangte et de R. racemosa, d'après ses caractéristiques
morphologiques intermédiaires et partagées. D'autres
recherches sont nécessaires pour avoir une image plus précise
des Rhizophora taxa et de leur distribution à travers la région
pacifique de l'Est atlantique IDuke, 2006]. La FAO reconnaît
Rhizophora harrisonii comme une espèce distincte [FAO, sous
presse]. La distribution serait d'une façon générale restreinte
aux estuaires équatoriaux des réseaux des plus grands fleuves
avec des courants d'eau douce plus continus (Duke, 2006].

l'Ouest et centrale
La biodiversité rend possibles toutes formes d'activité économique. Les
dommages subits par les composantes de la biodiversité ont des conséquences
économiques dont les impacts sont le plus durement ressentis par les pauvres.
Nul autre domaine n'illustre mieux cet état de choses que les écosystèmes de
mangroves et les populations humaines qui en sont tributaires. Les mangroves
soutiennent les moyens d'existence puisqu'elles servent d'habitat aux espèces
alimentaires, sont source de bois pour la construction d'habitations, la cuisine et
le chauffage, et sont indispensables à de nombreuses autres activités
commerciales et de subsistance. Les mangroves protègent également les zones
côtières de l'érosion et des ondes de tempêtes. À l'heure où la tendance générale
est au déclin des mangroves, on commence à réaliser pleinement le rôle de cet
habitat si précieux.
Le présent rapport fait le bilan de la situation des mangroves de 19 pays d'Afrique
occidentale et centrale - statut, répartition géographique, biodiversité,
utilisations, menaces et facteurs de changement. Bien que de nombreuses études
nationales, régionales et mondiales de cet habitat soient en cours, il reste des
lacunes considérables qui soulignent la nécessité de poursuivre les évaluations
dans ces régions.
Le rapport conclut qu'il y a eu un déclin des étendues de mangroves dans la région
au cours des 25 dernières années, et que ce déclin aura des conséquences.
