Imagine a packed party: music is blaring and you can feel the bass vibrate in your chest, lights are flashing, balloons are falling from the ceiling and the air is filled with hundreds of separate conversations. At the same time your cell phone is vibrating in your pocket and your drink is fizzing in the glass. Now imagine you can block out this assault on your senses to create a perfectly quiet bubble around you, only letting in the unmistakable voice of your best friend who’s trying to get your attention from the other side of the room.

Applied to the grand scale of the Universe, that’s a bit like the level of noise detection and reduction ESA has proven with its LISA Pathfinder mission in order to create the quietest place in space. Why? To set the stage for its successor, LISA, to detect gravitational waves from high-energy events in space.

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime that travel out from the source. Even as you accidentally bump into someone at the crowded party you make a gravitational wave, but it is so insignificantly small as to be undetectable. You need the interaction between attention-seeking objects with a large gravity, something as large and powerful as the collision of two black holes, or the explosion of a dying star, or the dance of two super-dense neutron stars spinning wildly around one another, to create any noticeable ripple in spacetime.

But even then the distortion effects are at the minuscule scale of a few millionths of a millionth of a metre over a distance of a million kilometres. You wouldn’t even notice if such a gravitational wave passed through you while you were reading this article, but yet the Universe is teeming with their echoes.

The trick in detecting them is first to reduce all external noises, and then look out for the minute stretch-and-squeeze effect by the change they induce to space, which can be measured, for example, using a laser beam. That is, if the space between two points gets stretched it takes longer for the laser beam to go from one point to another; conversely, if it gets compressed, the beam reaches the second point slightly quicker.

This concept has already been proven on Earth with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, LIGO, and the Virgo observatory. These facilities, operated by an international collaboration of over a thousand scientists, comprise pairs of either three or four km-long ‘arms’ at 90º to one another, each equipped with a laser beam and mirror system. As a gravitational wave passes through, the lengths of the arms are lengthened and shortened respectively by a minuscule fraction, tiny but enough to be noticeable as a change in the reflected laser pattern by the highly accurate equipment.

This was first achieved in 2015 when a gravitational wave was recorded, produced by a pair of coalescing black holes several tens the mass of our Sun, about 1.3 billion light-years away. With the detection of this brief 0.2 second signal, Einstein’s century-old prediction about the very existence of gravitational waves was proven right.

However, Earth detectors have limited space and they cannot escape external influences, ranging from vehicles passing by to local seismic activity. Their size is great for detecting high-frequency (10–1000 Hz) gravitational waves, like those coming from coalescing pairs of stellar-mass black holes or neutron stars, but isn’t sensitive to lower frequency waves (0.00002–0.1 Hz) generated by supermassive black holes a million times more massive than the Sun. In addition, a cosmological background of gravitational waves covering the entire spectrum down to even lower frequencies (0.000000000000001 Hz) are thought to be produced by the formation of Universe itself in the theorised phase of ‘inflation’, the brief, accelerated expansion in its first moments 13.8 billion years ago.

To access the lower-frequency waves, we need to use the playground of space. Enter ESA’s Laser Interferometer Space Antenna – LISA – a three-satellite fleet that will create a triangular formation separated by 2.5 million km and connected by laser beams, following Earth in orbit around the Sun. Such an endeavour, planned for launch in 2034, is pushing the boundaries of current technology.

Indeed, the key requirement for a space mission to measure any possible distortion caused by a passing gravitational wave is that it is isolated from all external and internal forces, which are present even in space, except gravity. To prove the fundamental concept of such a mission, ESA and its partners built LISA Pathfinder, which successfully concluded last year, having demonstrated that offending internal and external ‘noise’ sources could indeed be removed to provide the quiet environment needed to make gravitational wave detections with the full-size LISA mission.

To achieve this, the technology demonstrator mission used two 2 kg free-falling cubes separated by 38 cm and linked by lasers. The spacecraft acted as a shield around them, protecting them from external sources. It manoeuvred around them using tiny micro-newton thrusters to oppose solar radiation pressure and wind of particles, sensing the test mass motion and adjusting its own to compensate: essentially flying to within an accuracy of a few billionths of a metre and being able to sense the relative positions of the metal cubes to within a trillionth of a metre.

The mission already outperformed itself in the first week of operations, and now the final report card is in, showing that it even surpassed some of the requirements for its next-generation successor. These results are published today in Physical Review Letters.
LISA Pathfinder final performance analysis

The improvements since the initial two months dataset focused on the lower frequencies, since at higher frequencies, between 60 mHz and 1 Hz, the mission’s precision was limited only by the sensing noise of the equipment used to monitor the position and orientation of the test masses.

After many more months in space, the data showed a 10-fold reduction in the effect of escaping residual gas pressure inside the spacecraft, which caused gas molecules to bounce off the cubes – just as gas bubbles in your fizzy drink bounce off ice cubes or the glass, and the drink eventually goes ‘flat’.

More data also led to improved understanding of the small inertial force acting on the cubes caused by a combination of the shape of LISA Pathfinder’s orbit and the effect of the noise in the signal of the startrackers used to orient it – improved control in LISA will eliminate this force further.

A more accurate calculation of the electrostatic forces of the onboard electrical systems and magnetic fields has also now eliminated a systematic source of low-frequency noise.

Importantly, statistical analysis has allowed scientists to remove the effects of additional sporadic events to measure the noise at even lower frequencies than expected, down to 0.00002 Hz, essentially creating the quietest place in space. Overall, this proves that measurements at the low frequencies needed for LISA can be realised. It means that instead of only being able to detect a passing gravitational wave from a single event for a fraction of a second, LISA will be able to detect month- or even years-long chatter of multiple signals.

Furthermore, it will be sensitive to the first signs of a supermassive black hole merger, weeks before it has fully collided. This will give time to alert other ground- or space-based observatories so that they can also tune in to study the object at a range of other complementary wavelengths.

The mission will also likely uncover other currently unknown exotic sources of gravitational waves.

It will then be up to Europe’s next generation of scientists to decipher which soundtrack emanates from which mysterious broadcaster in the Universe, giving us all VIP access to the guest list at the gravitational wave party.

New Clues to Compositions of TRAPPIST-1 Planets

The seven Earth-size planets of TRAPPIST-1 are all mostly made of rock, with some having the potential to hold more water than Earth, according to a new study published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. The planets' densities, now known much more precisely than before, suggest that some planets could have up to 5 percent of their mass in water -- which is 250 times more than the oceans on Earth.

The form that water would take on TRAPPIST-1 planets would depend on the amount of heat they receive from their star, which is a mere 9 percent as massive as our Sun. Planets closest to the star are more likely to host water in the form of atmospheric vapor, while those farther away may have water frozen on their surfaces as ice. TRAPPIST-1e is the rockiest planet of them all, but still is believed to have the potential to host some liquid water.

Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have conducted the first spectroscopic survey of Earth-sized planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system's habitable zone. Hubble reveals that at least the inner five planets do not seem to contain puffy, hydrogen-rich atmospheres similar to gaseous planets such as Neptune. This means the atmospheres may be more shallow and rich in heavier gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and oxygen.

"We now know more about TRAPPIST-1 than any other planetary system apart from our own," said Sean Carey, manager of the Spitzer Science Center at Caltech/IPAC in Pasadena, California, and co-author of the new study. "The improved densities in our study dramatically refine our understanding of the nature of these mysterious worlds."

Since the extent of the system was revealed in February 2017, researchers have been working hard to better characterize these planets and collect more information about them. The new study offers better estimates than ever for the planets' densities.

What is TRAPPIST-1?

TRAPPIST-1 is named for the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) in Chile, which discovered two of the seven planets we know of today -- announced in 2016. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, in collaboration with ground-based telescopes, confirmed these planets and uncovered the other five in the system.

Since then, NASA's Kepler space telescope has also observed the TRAPPIST-1 system, and Spitzer began a program of 500 additional hours of TRAPPIST-1 observations, which will conclude in March. This new body of data helped study authors paint a clearer picture of the system than ever before -- although there is still much more to learn about TRAPPIST-1.

The TRAPPIST-1 planets huddle so close to one another that a person standing on the surface of one of these worlds would have a spectacular view of the neighboring planets in the sky. Those planets would sometimes appear larger than the Moon looks to an observer on Earth. They may also be tidally locked, meaning the same side of the planet is always facing the star, with each side in perpetual day or night. Although the planets are all closer to their star than Mercury is to the Sun, TRAPPIST-1 is such a cool star, some of its planets could still, in theory, hold liquid water.

In the new study, scientists led by Simon Grimm at the University of Bern in Switzerland created computer models to better simulate the planets based on all available information. For each planet, researchers had to come up with a model based on the newly measured masses, the orbital periods and a variety of other factors -- making it an extremely difficult, "35-dimensional problem," Grimm said. It took most of 2017 to invent new techniques and run simulations to characterize the planets' compositions.

What might these planets look like?

It is impossible to know exactly how each planet looks, because they are so far away. In our own solar system, the Moon and Mars have nearly the same density, yet their surfaces appear entirely different.

"Densities, while important clues to the planets' compositions, do not say anything about habitability. However, our study is an important step forward as we continue to explore whether these planets could support life," said Brice-Olivier Demory, co-author at the University of Bern.

Based on available data, here are scientists' best guesses about the appearances of the planets:

TRAPPIST-1b, the innermost planet, is likely to have a rocky core, surrounded by an atmosphere much thicker than Earth's. TRAPPIST-1c also likely has a rocky interior, but with a thinner atmosphere than planet b. TRAPPIST-1d is the lightest of the planets -- about 30 percent the mass of Earth. Scientists are uncertain whether it has a large atmosphere, an ocean or an ice layer -- all three of these would give the planet an "envelope" of volatile substances, which would make sense for a planet of its density.

Scientists were surprised that TRAPPIST-1e is the only planet in the system slightly denser than Earth, suggesting it may have a denser iron core than our home planet. Like TRAPPIST-1c, it does not necessarily have a thick atmosphere, ocean or ice layer -- making these two planets distinct in the system. It is mysterious why TRAPPIST-1e has a much rockier composition than the rest of the planets. In terms of size, density and the amount of radiation it receives from its star, this is the most similar planet to Earth.

TRAPPIST-1f, g and h are far enough from the host star that water could be frozen as ice across these surfaces. If they have thin atmospheres, they would be unlikely to contain the heavy molecules of Earth, such as carbon dioxide.

"It is interesting that the densest planets are not the ones that are the closest to the star, and that the colder planets cannot harbor thick atmospheres," said Caroline Dorn, study co-author based at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

How do we know?

Scientists are able to calculate the densities of the planets because they happen to be lined up such that when they pass in front of their star, our Earth- and space-based telescopes can detect a dimming of its light. This is called a transit. The amount by which the starlight dims is related to the radius of the planet.

To get the density, scientists take advantage of what are called "transit timing variations." If there were no other gravitational forces on a transiting planet, it would always cross in front of its host star in the same amount of time -- for example, Earth orbits the Sun every 365 days, which is how we define one year. But because the TRAPPIST-1 planets are packed so close together, they change the timing of each other's "years" ever so slightly. Those variations in orbital timing are used to estimate the planets' masses. Then, mass and radius are used to calculate density.

Next Steps

The next step in exploring TRAPPIST-1 will be NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, which will be able to delve into the question of whether these planets have atmospheres and, if so, what those atmospheres are like. A recent study using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope found no detection of hydrogen-dominated atmospheres on planets TRAPPIST-1d, e and f -- another piece of evidence for rocky composition -- although the hydrogen-dominated atmosphere cannot be ruled out for g.

Illustrations of these worlds will change as ongoing scientificinvestigations home in on their properties.

"Our conceptions of what these planets look like today may change dramatically over time," said Robert Hurt, senior visualization scientist at the Spitzer Science Center. "As we learn more about these planets, the pictures we make will evolve in response to our improved understanding.

Rawhide est une série télévisée américaine en 217 épisodes de 50 minutes en noir et blanc, créée par Charles Marquis Warren et diffusée entre le 9 janvier 1959 et le 7 décembre 1965 sur le réseau CBS.

En France, la série a été diffusée à partir du 30 juin 1986 sur Canal+.

Synopsis

Cette série raconte le voyage d'un groupe de vachers (cow-boys) chargés de convoyer 3 000 têtes de bétail de San Antonio, Texas, à Sedalia, Missouri, dans les années qui suivent la guerre de Sécession1. Le groupe, où se distinguent les personnages de Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood) et du cuisinier, est dirigé par le chef de piste Gil Favor (Eric Fleming). Le parcours est émaillé par une suite de rencontres, origines d'autant d’incidents (saison 1), qui ne remettent cependant pas en question l'avancée de la caravane.

Ce thème est également connu par les interprétations parodiques effectuées par le groupe des Blues Brothers dans le film éponyme, lors d'une traversée nocturne du désert dans Fievel au Far West, ou encore par l'âne dans Shrek 2. Les Dead Kennedys l'ont repris en version punk dans leur album In God We Trust Inc. Deux poèmes corses du XXIème siècle

Ce sont deux poèmes écrits – en français pour le premier et en corse pour le second – par deux poètes corses appartenant à deux générations différentes , Jean-François Agostini et Marcu Biancarelli, et qui furent publiés en 2006 pour le premier et en 2002 pour le second.
Deux poèmes qui me semblent illustrer , chacun à leur manière, le fantasme universel et intemporel de la rencontre avec une belle et mystérieuse inconnue – la fascination du poète et/ou les jeux des regards – , largement célébré dans la littérature et dont on retrouve des échos plus prosaïques jusque dans les petites annonces de Libération…
Deux poèmes qui se déroulent dans un aéroport, lieu de transit intense, – preuve, s’il en était besoin, que la poésie insulaire sait intégrer des éléments de notre vie moderne – dans une sorte « d’entre- deux », un seuil magique hors du temps et de l’espace, où l’attente solitaire est propice à l’observation et à la rêverie, à une certaine disponibilité poétique.
Deux poèmes qu’il ma semblé également intéressant de rapprocher du fait de leur différence formelle témoignant de la variété de cette « production poétique » insulaire.

Ce fut donc ce poème savoureux découvert sur la toile – où je furetais après ma lecture de C’est ou de Jean-François Agostini – qui me remit d’emblée en mémoire un poème touchant de Marcu Biancarelli lu deux ans auparavant dans une Anthologie de la poésie corse prêtée par FXR Renucci (que je mis ensuite à contribution pour le retrouver ).

croisées : ses jambes – sans bas ni gêne. 
Être son hôte oui être son hôte 
une heure en l’air. De son regard ver- 
tigineux ôter le dard et comme 
un astronaute en lune de miel, 
la désabeiller, puis—– voler vers…

(Note de l’animateur du blog : les tirets présents dans le texte sont en fait des blancs dans le texte original, la disposition des mots est importante chez Agostini, je n’arrive pas à lui rendre justice sur ce point, désolé).

J’aime la concision intense et lumineuse de ce poème, une sorte de flash fixant dans un même instantané une apparition se confondant avec le poème, comme si le regard et l’écriture poétique marchaient de pair. Et le poète ne se contente pas de jouer sur les mots à des fins ludiques, il les déshabille – désabeille – comme une femme, il saisit, au-delà de ces jambes croisées, l’ouverture, l’abîme d’un regard et ménage par ses césures ou ses blancs l’ accès à un ailleurs : ver-/vers …

Il s’agit d’un poème narratif au lyrisme personnel comportant plusieurs strophes. Un poème qui s’épanche, lui, comme un «filmu chi no fecimu cinqui minuti» et dont le sujet semble la vie amoureuse du poète, joies et peines données par une femme ou par les femmes, par «tutti i donni à tempu», réelles ou rêvées, venant du ciel ou de l’enfer, le héros ayant sans doute à lutter contre ses contradictions et ses propres démons (en référence au titre du recueil Parechii dimonia dont est tiré ce poème, et que, je le précise, je n’ai pas lu)…
Notre poète narrateur semble bien mal en point au début du texte avec «’Ssa tencia d’addispiratu», plutôt looser pathétique retournant chez lui «a pena à u cori» que «avvinturieri », pas vraiment un Don Juan car il a visiblement quelques problèmes pour plaire aux femmes:
«Piacciu à i donni
In l’aeruporti.»
et pour les retenir :
«In partanza com’è tutti ‘ssi donni /…Sempri in partanza».
C’est une rencontre à la fois réaliste et irréelle avec une femme dont le regard semble le faire renaître et qui, même si le poète semble se satisfaire de ce moment bref mais intense qui lui est donné, n’exclut pas le désir de savoir autre chose que «…u disideriu /Putenti è fughjittivu»…

Et pour terminer, revenons sur la fascination des deux poètes pour ces belles inconnues, en citant Baudelaire :

New NASA Space Sensors to Address Key Earth Questions

Why is the Arctic warming faster than the rest of the planet? Does mineral dust warm or cool the atmosphere? NASA has selected two new, creative research proposals to develop small, space-based instruments that will tackle these fundamental questions about our home planet and its environment. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, is a key participant on both instruments.

The Polar Radiant Energy in the Far Infrared Experiment (PREFIRE) will fly a pair of small CubeSat satellites to probe a little-studied portion of the radiant energy emitted by Earth for clues about Arctic warming, sea ice loss and ice-sheet melting. Tristan L'Ecuyer of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, is the principal investigator.

The Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) will use a sensor mounted to the exterior of the International Space Station to determine the mineral composition ofnatural sources that produce dust aerosols around the world. By measuring in detail which minerals make up the dust, EMIT will help to answer the essential question of whether this type of aerosol warms or cools the atmosphere. Robert Green of JPL is the principal investigator.

These two instruments were competitively selected from 14 proposals considered under NASA's fourth Earth Venture Instrument opportunity. Earth Venture investigations are small, targeted science investigations that complement NASA's larger missions. The National Research Council recommended in 2007 that NASA undertake this type of regularly solicited, science-based, quick-turnaround project. The council's recently released decadal survey recommended the continuance of the program.

"PREFIRE and EMIT make innovative use of technologies first developed by NASA for planetary missions to address important, longstanding questions about Earth," said Michael Freilich, director of the Earth Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

The Arctic helps to regulate Earth's overall temperature by radiating back into space much of the excess energy from the Sun that is absorbed at lower latitudes. Current satellite instruments do not detect all of the wavelengths of this energy radiating from our planet. PREFIRE will fill in the current data gap at far-infrared wavelengths, collecting information that will help scientists diagnose the impact of this outgoing radiation on the Arctic region's energy balance.

PREFIRE will fly miniaturized thermal infrared spectrometers on two CubeSat satellites, each about the size of a loaf of bread. The sensors are based on technology previously flown on the Mars Climate Sounder, an instrument on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The CubeSats will orbit Earth's poles to measure far-infrared emissions and how they change throughout the day and over seasons. The observations will allow scientists to assess how changes in thermal infrared emissions at the top of Earth's atmosphere are related to changes in cloud cover and surface conditions below, such as the amount of sea ice and meltwater on the surface of the ice.

The PREFIRE team brings together expertise in remote sensing, Earth system modeling and Arctic ice. JPL and the Space Dynamics Laboratory of North Logan, Utah, are mission partners. JPL is responsible for project management and is building and delivering the instrument. Brian Drouin of JPL is the deputy principal investigator, while JPL's Brian Kahn and Nicole-Jeanne Schlegel are co-investigators.

The composition of airborne dust particles is largely unknown, but it is a critical factor in determining whether mineral-based dust has a cooling or warming effect on the atmosphere. Scientists do not currently have a global inventory of the natural mineral sources of dust, and as a result the global impacts of dust on weather, atmospheric circulation and other aspects of Earth's environment are not well established.

EMIT's hyperspectral instrument will measure the different wavelengths of light emitted by minerals on the surface of deserts and other dust sources to determine their composition. The EMIT sensor is based in part on NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper instrument aboard the Indian Space Research Organization's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft.

The EMIT team brings together broad expertise that covers mineral measurements, soil science, remote sensing of surface properties and Earth system modeling. The project's modeling component will use the data collected to advance our understanding of the role of atmospheric dust in Earth's climate and better predict how it can be expected to change in the future.

Earth Venture missions provide an innovative approach to address Earth science research with regular windows of opportunity to accommodate new scientific priorities. The missions are managed by NASA's Earth System Science Pathfinder program, located at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, for the agency's Science Mission Directorate.

The first Earth Venture instruments headed to space are preparing for launch within the next year. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) will measure the distributions, canopy heights and changes in global vegetation from the space station, providing insights into how forests and ecosystems are affected by changes in water availability and other environmental and human factors.

Eric Lindstrom is Physical Oceanography Program Scientist at NASA Headquarters. For the last 20 years, his primary job has been supporting NASA satellite missions related to measuring physical characteristics of the ocean (principally, temperature, salinity, sea level, and winds) and supporting the oceanographers that generate knowledge from such data. He was recently aboard the Research Vessel (R/V) Roger Revelle in the Pacific Ocean as part of the Salinity Processes in the Upper Ocean Regional Study-2 (SPURS-2) field campaign. SPURS is undertaking oceanographic field experiments to further understand the essential role of the ocean in the global water cycle using a plethora of oceanographic equipment and technology, including salinity-sensing satellites, research cruises, floats, drifters, autonomous gliders and moorings.

What lives below us? This is a question that mariners have wondered for ages. We no longer think of the darker answers to this question—the sea monsters, the Kraken, the great whales. For most aboard, the thinking is akin to a fisherman’s—tuna, mahimahi, sharks. But for SPURS-2, Sophie Clayton is answering this question in terms of microscopic life, namely diverse phytoplankton (plant life) and zooplankton (animal life).

Sophie is an oceanographer interested in understanding how ocean currents at all scales shape the distribution and biodiversity of phytoplankton. She uses a combination of numerical models, large-scale data analysis, and targeted observations made at sea. Her Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program. Now she is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington, working extensively with observations of phytoplankton distributions made using an Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB) that analyzes discrete samples with video and a hyperspectral optical sensor for recording the continuous optical properties of the water.

An IFCB is an instrument that is used primarily to count cells, but it also can detect and record information on different properties of the cells that it counts. A water sample is channeled into a thin stream that is passed in front of a laser, and the scatter and fluorescence from each cell that passes along the stream is detected and recorded. In the IFCB, the camera is triggered to take a picture only when fluorescence over a threshold value is detected. This means that the instrument only takes pictures of cells that contain chlorophyll. The images are then stored for analysis back on shore. In addition to the images that are collected, we use the optical properties of the cells (fluorescence and scatter) in the analysis.

Sophie’s work is enabled by surface water collected from the salinity snake while we are underway or from bottle samples taken during Conductivity- Temperature-Depth (CTD) casts. Similar mosaics are made from surface water every 20 minutes. Overall, there will be close to 2,000 mosaics of cellular life to examine. Samples are also held for later DNA analysis.

Out here, for the most part, the plankton are actually most abundant below the surface at 40-70 meters depth. Deeper down, below the surface layer mixed by the wind, life has better access to the chemical nutrients of the deep sea while still having enough light for photosynthesis. Plant life thrives in a layer that best balances the light and nutrient requirements. Of course, the grazing microscopic animals follow this layer closely. So Sophie is keen to collect water from this layer during our CTD casts. She can tell where to sample by optical properties also measured on CTD casts.

Understanding plankton abundance and diversity is a core requirement for ocean climate science. Phytoplankton are responsible for about half of all photosynthetic production on the planet. (Land plants are also responsible for about half.) It makes them a key part of the carbon cycle on the planet. Over long periods, phytoplankton can remove carbon from the upper ocean and return it to sediment for long-term sequestration. Over hundreds of thousands of years, phytoplankton act to reverse the greenhouse effect caused by pulses of carbon dioxide injected into the atmosphere by volcanoes or humans.

In a prior blog, I wondered about the fate of life in the sea. What would become of that abundant life with the continued impacts of ocean acidification, industrial fishing, and plastics pollution? Science struggles to make any predictions. Oceanographers particularly, because of our close affinity and observation of the sea, hope that the assaults of society on the sea do not damage its inherent ability to stabilize and heal the rapid changes overtaking the planet. Our baseline understanding of the complex marine ecosystem is still quite primitive. The kind of “survey” work that Sophie is undertaking is absolutely necessary to further our understanding of the biogeography of the ocean and how it is changing. Let’s hope she has a successful career!

A miniaturised laboratory inside the orbital laboratory that is ESA’s Columbus module, this 40 cm cube has been one of its quiet scientific triumphs.

Kubik – from the Russian for cube – has been working aboard the International Space Station since before Columbus’ arrival in February 2008.

“Kubik hosts a wide range of life science experiments in weightlessness with minimal crew involvement,” explains Jutta Krause of the payload development team. “Research teams prepare their experiments and make use of existing or custom-built ‘experiment units’, which are each about the size of a box of pocket tissues.

“Once slotted into Kubik by an astronaut, they are automatically activated through internal electrical connections, running autonomously on a programmed timeline until they are finally retrieved for return to Earth.

“At the centre of the temperature-controlled Kubik is a centrifuge to simulate gravity, so double experiments can be run with one unit in microgravity plus an Earth-gravity control or intermediate gravity level – giving researchers insight into whether any results they observe might be related to weightlessness or some other environmental factor, such as space radiation.”

The challenge for researchers is to miniaturise their experiments to fit within the confines of these compact units, adds team member Janine Liedtke: “We aim to refurbish experiment units as much as possible, so in some cases teams can adapt a previously flown unit, or else we can tailor new units to their needs.

“Why fly biological samples in weightlessness? Because we know many biological systems are partially gravity-dependent, so by ‘taking away’ gravity researchers can gain broader insight into how they work.

“To give an idea, Kubik has over the years hosted samples of bacteria, fungi, human white blood cells and stem cells from bone marrow and umbilical cords, plant seedlings, and swimming tadpoles. A pending payload is designed to examine how microbial biofilms interact with rock surfaces across different gravity levels, from weightlessness to Mars and Earth gravity.”

Experiment times are limited because the samples are biological – part of the work is carefully planning the mission scenario. Even the hours needed for the ascent and descent of the experiment unit to and from Columbus are carefully accounted for, to ensure that they are back again within a couple of weeks of launch, depending on the sensitivity of the samples.

“We’ve been using the Soyuz, and now the SpaceX Dragon,” adds Jutta. “Typically, when one vehicle goes up another one comes down. This ensures that experiments can be up- and downloaded rapidly.

“A fixative is often added to an experiment at its conclusion, so researchers get to examine it as it was in microgravity. Additionally, units can be refrigerated during their return trip.”

Twelve experiments from ESA and national space agencies have so far been run in Kubik, with ESA planning seven more by the end of this decade. The facility is due to be upgraded with new electronics, to offer more features and keep it fully operational into its second decade.

NASA Tests Atomic Clock for Deep Space Navigation

In deep space, accurate timekeeping is vital to navigation, but many spacecraft lack precise timepieces on board. For 20 years, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, has been perfecting a clock. It's not a wristwatch; not something you could buy at a store. It's the Deep Space Atomic Clock (DSAC), an instrument perfect for deep space exploration.

Currently, most missions rely on ground-based antennas paired with atomic clocks for navigation. Ground antennas send narrowly focused signals to spacecraft, which, in turn, return the signal. NASA uses the difference in time between sending a signal and receiving a response to calculate the spacecraft's location, velocity and path.

This method, though reliable, could be made much more efficient. For example, a ground station must wait for the spacecraft to return a signal, so a station can only track one spacecraft at a time. This requires spacecraft to wait for navigation commands from Earth rather than making those decisions on board and in real-time.

"Navigating in deep space requires measuring vast distances using our knowledge of how radio signals propagate in space," said Todd Ely of JPL, DSAC's principal investigator. "Navigating routinely requires distance measurements accurate to a meter or better. Since radio signals travel at the speed of light, that means we need to measure their time-of-flight to a precision of a few nanoseconds. Atomic clocks have done this routinely on the ground for decades. Doing this in space is what DSAC is all about."

The DSAC project aims to provide accurate onboard timekeeping for future NASA missions. Spacecraft using this new technology would no longer have to rely on two-way tracking. A spacecraft could use a signal sent from Earth to calculate position without returning the signal and waiting for commands from the ground, a process that can take hours. Timely location data and onboard control allow for more efficient operations, more precise maneuvering and adjustments to unexpected situations.

This paradigm shift enables spacecraft to focus on mission objectives rather than adjusting their position to point antennas earthward to close a link for two-way tracking.

Additionally, this innovation would allow ground stations to track multiple satellites at once near crowded areas like Mars. In certain scenarios, the accuracy of that tracking data would exceed traditional methods by a factor of five.

DSAC is an advanced prototype of a small, low-mass atomic clock based on mercury-ion trap technology. The atomic clocks at ground stations in NASA's Deep Space Network are about the size of a small refrigerator. DSAC is about the size of a four-slice toaster, and could be further miniaturized for future missions.

The DSAC test flight will take this technology from the laboratory to the space environment. While in orbit, the DSAC mission will use the navigation signals from U.S. GPS coupled with precise knowledge of GPS satellite orbits and clocks to confirm DSAC's performance. The demonstration should confirm that DSAC can maintain time accuracy to better than two nanoseconds (.000000002 seconds) over a day, with a goal of achieving 0.3 nanosecond accuracy.

Once DSAC has proved its mettle, future missions can use its technology enhancements. The clock promises increased tracking data quantity and improved tracking data quality. Coupling DSAC with onboard radio navigation could ensure that future exploration missions have the navigation data needed to traverse the solar system.

Technologies aboard DSAC could also improve GPS clock stability and, in turn, the service GPS provides to users worldwide. Ground-based test results have shown DSAC to be upwards of 50 times more stable than the atomic clocks currently flown on GPS. DSAC promises to be the most stable navigation space clock ever flown.

"We have lofty goals for improving deep space navigation and science using DSAC," said Ely. "It could have a real and immediate impact for everyone here on Earth if it's used to ensure the availability and continued performance of the GPS system."

DSAC is a partnership between NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate and the Space Communications and Navigation program office, a program under the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. DSAC will launch in 2018 as a hosted payload on General Atomic's Orbital Test Bed spacecraft aboard the U.S. Air Force Space Technology Program (STP-2) mission.

L' Île de Cumberland est une île de l'océan Atlantique rattachée à l'archipel des Sea Islands. Elle se trouve au large de la Géorgie et dépend du comté de Camden (30°51′ N, 81°27′ O). Elle a 28 km de longueur et sa superficie est de 147.37 km², dont 68.19 km² de marais, d'estrans, et de criques submergées à marée haute. L'île est seulement desservie par une navette accostant dans la petite ville de Saint-Marys.
Orographie

L'essentiel de l'Île de Cumberland est rattaché à la réserve marine nationale du Cumberland Island National Seashore, bien qu'il s'y trouve quelques propriétés privées. Le parc est maintenu en zone naturelle.

Cumberland est une des îles de la barrière océanique de Géorgie, et celle qui offre la plus grande longueur de côte aux courants océaniques. Le parc national fixe une fréquentation maximale de visiteurs : soit de 300 visiteurs par jour, et les campeurs ne peuvent y passer que sept nuits.
Écosystèmes

L'île présente trois écosystèmes différents :

Le long de la côte ouest s'étendent des marais salins.
On peut y voir pousser des chênes battus par les vents et couverts de mousse, et des palmiers en lisière d'une forêt maritime dense.
La plage s'étire sur 27 km depuis le cap de Long Point au nord jusqu'au promontoire méridional qui fait face à Amelia Island en Floride. Tout au long de ce ruban de sable blanc, on peut observer des chevaux sauvages, des oiseaux et toute une faune variée. Ces plages sont également un site de ponte important pour les tortues Caouanne.

Un chalet traditionnel fait fonction d'écomusée, et évoque l'histoire de l'île et de ses habitants.
Histoire

L'Île de Cumberland est en réalité un ensemble de deux îles : la grande île proprement dite et Little Cumberland Island, qui y est connectée par un estran. Little Cumberland est une propriété privée et n'est donc pas, en principe, accessible au public.

Historiquement, l'Île de Cumberland appartenait à des particuliers, mais de larges portions ont été données à la National Park Foundation par des membres ou des héritiers de la famille Carnegie en 1971. D'autres terrains ont été acquis grâce à des dons de la Mellon Foundation et du Congrès américain, et en 1972 l'Île de Cumberland reçut le statut de rivage protégé. Un petit nombre de familles (principalement des descendants des premiers propriétaires) possèdent toujours une maison dans les parties ouest et nord de l'île, bien que très peu y séjournent toute l'année. Beaucoup ont fini par vendre leur propriété au National Park Service (NPS), en contrepartie d'un droit de visite à vie.

L'Île de Cumberland fut découverte par l'explorateur anglais John Davis. Au cours du XVIIe siècle, elle était rattachée à la Mission de Mocama de la Floride espagnole, et était le siège des villes de la mission espagnole San Pedro de Mocama.

Two small asteroids recently discovered by astronomers at the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) near Tucson, Arizona, are safely passing by Earth within one lunar distance this week.

The first of this week's close-approaching asteroids -- discovered by CSS on Feb. 4 -- is designated asteroid 2018 CC. Its close approach to Earth came Tuesday (Feb. 6) at 12:10 p.m. PST (3:10 p.m. EST) at a distance of about 114,000 miles (184,000 kilometers). The asteroid is estimated to be between 50 and 100 feet (15 and 30 meters) in size.

Of potentially greater interest is asteroid 2018 CB,which will also pass closely by Earth on Friday, Feb. 9, at around 2:30 p.m. PST (5:30 p.m. EST), at a distance of about 39,000 miles (64,000 kilometers), which is less than one-fifth the distance of Earth to the Moon). The asteroid, which is estimated to be between 50 and 130 feet (15 and 40 meters) in size, was also discovered by CSS on Feb. 4.

"Although 2018 CB is quite small, it might well be larger than the asteroid that entered the atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia, almost exactly five years ago, in 2013," said Paul Chodas, manager of the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "Asteroids of this size do not often approach this close to our planet -- maybe only once or twice a year."

JPL hosts the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies for NASA's Near-Earth Object Observations Program, an element of the Planetary Defense Coordination Office within the agency's Science Mission Directorate.

Le Tréport est une commune française, située dans le département de la Seine-Maritime en région Normandie.

Les habitants sont appelés les Tréportais.

Avec Eu et Mers-les-Bains, elle est l'une des trois principales villes de l'unité urbaine d'Eu qui fait entièrement partie de l'intercommunalité dénommée communauté de communes des Villes Sœurs.

Géographie

Située dans le nord du département et au bord de la Manche, la commune du Tréport possède une plage de galets au pied des falaises de craie et un port. La commune a pour origine l'estuaire de la Bresle, petit fleuve côtier, long de 68 à 72 kilomètres (selon les sources).

Station balnéaire, la commune dispose d'un casino, de restaurants et de brasseries.

Avec Eu et Mers-les-Bains, elle fait partie des « trois villes sœurs ».
Toponymie

Mentionné au XIe siècle sous les formes latinisées Ulteris portum et Ultris portum, d'un bas latin non attesté *Ultrensis portus « le port qui est au-delà », celui-ci se situant en aval de la ville d'Eu. La forme picarde le Troiport, parfois citée au Moyen Âge, ne s'est pas maintenue1.
Histoire
La ville fut desservie par un tramway électrique dès 1902. L'exploitation du Tramway d'Eu-Le Tréport-Mers cessa en 1934.

L'abbaye Saint-Michel du Tréport, fondée en 1053 par les bénédictins, a disparu à la Révolution.

La vocation de station balnéaire du Tréport a débuté sous le règne de Louis-Philippe, quand la famille de ce souverain, résidant régulièrement à Eu, inaugura la mode des bains de mer. La grande bourgeoisie parisienne ne tarda pas à construire des villas sur le front de mer et à y mener une vie mondaine jusqu'à la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La plupart de ces villas ont été détruites lors des opérations militaires de 1944.

Le samedi 16 janvier 1943, trois gendarmes de la brigade d'Eu, sur ordre du préfet, viennent chercher Rachel, 10 ans (née le 5 novembre 1933 à Paris, dans le 12e arrondissement), juste après la récréation de l'après-midi au cours élémentaire de l'école de la rue Susanne dans la classe de madame Graville. Ils l'emmènent chez elle, 14 rue Alexandre-Papin et arrêteront sa mère, Victoria née Mitrani, sa grand-mère, Mme Mitrani Calo née Léon, 69 ans, invalide, et sa petite sœur Colette, 2 ans, née le 23 novembre 1940. Internées à la prison du Pollet à Dieppe puis transférées au camp de Drancy, elles seront déportées sans retour le 11 février 1943 vers Auschwitz par le convoi n° 47. Le père, Vitali Salmona, commerçant, avait été pris dans la rafle du 20 août 1941 à Paris, et déporté sans retour du camp de Drancy vers Auschwitz en juin 1942.

Un établissement scolaire du Tréport porte le nom de collège Rachel-Salmona.

La paix et la reconstruction ont ramené un retour du tourisme populaire et de la vie balnéaire.

Une huîtrière, où l'on dégustait des huîtres à la sortie même des bassins, se situait tout au bout de la jetée juste au- dessous des falaises, après l'ancien funiculaire. Lieu pittoresque et populaire, l'huîtrière ferma ses portes dans les années soixante-dix.
La gare du Tréport - Mers, ouverte le 12 mai 1872, permit l'accès des Parisiens à la station balnéaire et favorisa son développement.
On voit ici les voyageurs descendus d'un train de plaisir, avant la Première Guerre mondiale.

L'évolution du nombre d'habitants est connue à travers les recensements de la population effectués dans la commune depuis 1793. À partir de 2006, les populations légales des communes sont publiées annuellement par l'Insee. Le recensement repose désormais sur une collecte d'information annuelle, concernant successivement tous les territoires communaux au cours d'une période de cinq ans. Pour les communes de moins de 10 000 habitants, une enquête de recensement portant sur toute la population est réalisée tous les cinq ans, les populations légales des années intermédiaires étant quant à elles estimées par interpolation ou extrapolation5. Pour la commune, le premier recensement exhaustif entrant dans le cadre du nouveau dispositif a été réalisé en 20056.

En 2015, la commune comptait 4 935 habitantsNote 1, en diminution de 6,09 % par rapport à 2010 (Seine-Maritime : +0,48 %, France hors Mayotte : +2,44 %).

Économie

Le port départemental du Tréport a été construit sur l'embouchure de la Bresle, fleuve qui marque historiquement la limite entre la Normandie et la Picardie. Mers-les-Bains est donc sur la partie picarde de ce petit estuaire dont la partie sud fait fonction de port de pêche, de port de plaisance et de port de commerce (bois, argiles et phosphates essentiellement). Il est géré par la Chambre de commerce et d'industrie du Littoral normand-picard.

Le Tréport était le siège de la Chambre de commerce et d'industrie du Tréport jusqu'en 2006. Elle gérait l’aérodrome du Tréport et son port. Elle est devenue une antenne de la Chambre de commerce et d'industrie Littoral Hauts-de-France .

L'ancien funiculaire du Tréport a été inauguré le 29 juin 1908. Après une longue interruption, il est remplacé par un nouveau matériel depuis 2006.

La série policière Les Témoins créée par Marc Herpoux et Hervé Hadmar et diffusée à partir du 18 mars 2015 sur France 2 avec Thierry Lhermitte et Marie Dompnier a pour cadre la ville du Tréport. De nombreuses scènes y sont tournées.

Personnalités liées à la commune

Paul Paray est un chef d'orchestre et compositeur français, né le 24 mai 1886 au Tréport et mort le 10 octobre 1979 à Monte-Carlo. Son père, sculpteur sur ivoire, remplit aussi les fonctions de maître de chapelle au Tréport. Paul Paray composa en hommage à sa ville natale sa symphonie n° 2, Le Tréport, (1936-1939).

Georges Onésime Choquart est un résistant français, né le 16 juin 1899 au Tréport et mort le 7 mai 1970 à Mers-les-Bains.

William Sheller mentionne Le Tréport dans sa chanson Photos-souvenirs.

L'écrivain Christian Morel de Sarcus séjournait, enfant, à l'Hôtel des Bains (aujourd'hui disparu).

Quick access to space, high-speed data feed and a unique vantage point are the selling points of a new commercial venture on the International Space Station. Its name is Bartolomeo, and its versatile design allows for many mission types at competitive prices from next year.

The Space Station has been growing in size during the past 20 years, and so have the number of platforms dedicated to science in orbit. However, researchers and engineers are finding it harder to acquire slots for their experiments.

A decade after its launch, Europe’s Columbus laboratory makes room on the outside to a new platform that offers an affordable, quick and easy access to space.

Bartolomeo aims to attract new European users to the Station, including a community of start-ups and space entrepreneurs. As companies piggyback off existing Station resources to reduce cost, new commercial opportunities will arise.

Earth observation and telecommunications, exobiology and space weather research are areas of great demand that will benefit.

The Bartolomeo All-in-one Mission Service will provide end-to-end access for external payloads on the Station. It provides unobstructed view of Earth, direct control of the experiments from the ground and the possibility of retrieving samples.

Today, ESA and Airbus Defence and Space signed a commercial partnership that will make Bartolomeo a reality next year. While the European company funds the development and promotes commercialisation, ESA will support the launch, installation and operations.

This is the first time that a European commercial partnership is offering the opportunity to carry out science and demonstrate technology outside the Station.

The Bartolomeo platform, named after the younger brother of Christopher Columbus, will be mounted on the forward side of Columbus, 400 km above Earth. Users will enjoy a data downlink capacity of 10 Gbit/s – enough to download a high-definition movie within 30 seconds.
Dragon capture

The formula for payload size is flexible. Users can squeeze in as little as 5 kg by sharing the ride with other experiments, or have an entire slot of up to 450 kg at their disposal.

Bartolomeo offers 11 slots, and the waiting time from the moment a contract is signed and the ‘go for flight’ is one to two years – much shorter than the standard timeframe for experiments. The rental agreement in space is for a minimum of one year.

Bartolomeo is set for launch in 2019 on a SpaceX Dragon cargo ferry.

André Breton est un écrivain, poète, essayiste et théoricien du surréalisme, né à Tinchebray dans l'Orne, le 19 février 1896, mort à Paris le 28 septembre 1966.

Écrivain français né à Tinchebray (Orne) en 1896, mort à Paris en 1966. D'abord étudiant en médecine, il se tourne peu à peu vers la poésie. Il fréquente Apollinaire, Aragon, Éluard, lit Freud et Lautréamont, et s'affirme comme le théoricien du mouvement surréaliste. Il proclame alors sa volonté de rompre avec le passé et de renouveler les moyens d'expression : exploration du subconscient, du rêve, écriture automatique, etc. Politiquement, il opte pour le communisme (1927). Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il s'exile aux États-Unis (1941) et ne rentre qu'en 1947. Il est l'auteur du Manifeste du surréalisme ( 1924), de Clair de Terre (1924), de Nadja (1928), de L'Amour fou (1937)...

Il est connu, en particulier, pour ses livres Nadja, L'Amour fou, et les différents Manifestes du surréalisme. Son rôle de chef de file du mouvement surréaliste, et l'importance de son œuvre critique et théorique en matière d'écriture et d'arts plastiques, en font une figure majeure de l'art et de la littérature au XXe siècle.

Cassini Finds Saturn Moon Has 'Sea Level' Like Earth.

Saturn's moon Titan may be nearly a billion miles away from Earth, but a recently published paper based on data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft reveals a new way this distant world and our own are eerily similar. Just as the surface of oceans on Earth lies at an average elevation that we call "sea level," Titan's seas also lie at an average elevation.

This is the latest finding that shows remarkable similarities between Earth and Titan, the only other world we know of in our solar system that has stable liquid on its surface. The twist at Titan is that its lakes and seas are filled with hydrocarbons rather than liquid water, and water ice overlain by a layer of solid organic material serves as the bedrock surrounding these lakes and seas.

The new paper, led by Alex Hayes at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, finds that Titan's seas follow a constant elevation relative to Titan's gravitational pull -- just like Earth's oceans. Smaller lakes on Titan, it turns out, appear at elevations several hundred feet, or meters, higher than Titan's sea level. Lakes at high elevation are commonly found on Earth. The highest lake navigable by large ships, Lake Titicaca, is over 12,000 feet [3,700 meters] above sea level.

The new study suggests that elevation is important because Titan's liquid bodies appear to be connected under the surface in something akin to an aquifer system at Earth. Hydrocarbons appear to be flowing underneath Titan's surface similar to the way water flows through underground porous rock or gravel on Earth, so that nearby lakes communicate with each other and share a common liquid level.

The paper was based on data obtained by Cassini's radar instrument until just months before the spacecraft burned up in the Saturn atmosphere last year. It also used a new topographical map published in the same issue of Geophysical Research Letters.

L'entolome de Hochstetter (Entoloma hochstetteri) est une espèce de champignons trouvée en Nouvelle-Zélande et en Inde. Ce petit champignon est entièrement de couleur bleue, tandis que les lames ont une teinte légèrement rougeâtre due aux spores. La coloration bleue est due à la présence de trois pigments de type azulène. Entoloma hochstetteri n'est pas comestible, mais on ne sait pas s'il est ou non toxique.

Cette espèce a été l'un des six champignons indigènes émis dans une série de timbres sur les champignons en Nouvelle-Zélande en 2002. On le voit également au verso du billet de 50 $ émis par la Banque de Nouvelle-Zélande en 1990.

Taxonomie

L'espèce a été décrite comme Hygrophorus hochstetteri en 1866 par Reichardt, avant de recevoir son nom binomial actuel en 1962 par Stevenson. Il doit son nom au naturaliste allemand Ferdinand von Hochstetter.
Description

Entoloma hochstetteri a une fructification épigée qui peut être trouvée parmi la mousse oula litière de feuilles. Le chapeau peut atteindre jusqu'à 4 cm de diamètre et de forme conique. Le chapeau est de couleur bleu-indigo avec une teinte verte et est fibreux. Le bord du chapeau est strié et roulé vers l'intérieur. L'attache des lames au pied est adnée ou échancrée, les lames sont larges 3-5 mm, pour l'essentiel de même couleur que le chapeau, parfois avec une teinte jaune. Le stipe est cylindrique, pouvant atteindre 5 cm de longueur pour 0,5 cm de diamètre, fibreux. L'impression de spores est de couleur rouge-rose. Les spores font 9,9-13,2 sur 11,8-13,2 µm, sont tétraédriques, hyalines, lisses et à parois minces. Les basides font 35,2-44,2 sur 8,8-13,2 µm, sont en forme de massue, hyalines et ont deux ou quatre stérigmates.
Distribution

E. hochstetteri pousse dans les forêts des régions occidentales à la fois des îles du Nord et du Sud de la Nouvelle-Zélande, où il est associé aux espèces Nothofagus et Podocarpus. Il a également été trouvé en Inde.

"Je crois que c’est un souci de caractère, ou de personnalité…" "Mais au fait, c’est quoi la différence ?" En discutant avec un ami, j’ai réalisé à quel point ces deux mots sont utilisés comme synonymes interchangeables alors que leur signification n’est pas la même. Pour essayer d’y voir plus clair, j’ai posé la question à Michel Hansenne, directeur du service de psychologie de la personnalité et des différences individuelles à l’université de Liège.

Il explique : "En psychologie on emploie le terme personnalité, car le caractère a souvent une connotation négative." Ce n’est pas pour rien qu’on parle de "mauvais caractère" et pas de "mauvaise personnalité". En effet, dans leur étude (pdf) de 2006 intitulée "Personnalité, caractère et tempérament : la structure translinguistique des traits", les chercheurs Gérard Saucier et Lewis Goldberg partent du même constat : "Avec le temps, la psychologie de la personnalité a laissé le terme 'caractère' tomber en désuétude, mais certains chercheurs continuent d’évaluer l’idée selon laquelle les dimensions du caractère sont moins héritables et plus fondées sur la maturation que celles attribuées au tempérament."

C’est d’ailleurs le même auteur, Goldberg, qui a remis au goût du jour la théorie des Big Five, les cinq traits centraux de la personnalité qui constituent un repère de base : ouverture d’esprit, consciencieusité, extraversion, agréabilité et névrotisme. "La personnalité est la manière dont on se comporte, pense et décode la réalité de manière habituelle dans différents contextes. Elle se définit par des traits de personnalité, comme la chaleur, la sympathie, la sociabilité, la tolérance, l’inquiétude, la recherche de sensation, traits pour lesquels il existe de nombreuses différences entre les personnes, chacun pouvant se situer sur tous ces traits", continue Michel Hansenne.

En gros, si le terme caractère était utilisé par les psychologues, il constituerait la partie cachée de l’iceberg, tandis que la personnalité serait la partie à l’extérieur. Sur le dictionnaire Larousse, le caractère est défini en tant qu’ensemble des dispositions affectives constantes selon lesquelles un sujet réagit à son milieu, et qui composent sa personnalité. En génétique d’ailleurs, ces caractéristiques individuelles se transmettent de manière héréditaire. La personnalité, elle, serait une manifestation concrète, dans les comportements, de ces traits.

En psychologie, on considère classiquement que la personnalité est le résultat de l’interaction de deux grands domaines : le tempérament et le caractère. Le tempérament est l’ensemble des réponses automatiques aux stimulations émotionnelles qui forgent les habitudes. D’origine plutôt héréditaire, il manifeste une bonne stabilité de l’enfance à l’âge adulte. Sur la base de travaux en génétique du comportement, neurobiologie et psychiatrie, Cloninger a avancé en 1994 l’idée que le tempérament est constitué de 3 à 4 traits indépendants dont les principaux sont la recherche de la nouveauté, l’évitement de la souffrance, le besoin de récompense. Le caractère est constitué de 4 traits indépendants : l’autonomie, la coopérativité, la stabilité affective, la transcendance du soi. Les questionnaires psychiatriques, voire l’analyse de marqueurs biologiques conduisent à un profil particulier de tempérament, lui-même associé à un profil particulier de caractère. L’ensemble constitue la personnalité individuelle.

The Red Planet’s low gravity and lack of magnetic field makes its outermost atmosphere an easy target to be swept away by the solar wind, but new evidence from ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft shows that the Sun’s radiation may play a surprising role in its escape.

Why the atmospheres of the rocky planets in the inner Solar System evolved so differently over 4.6 billion years is key to understanding what makes a planet habitable. While Earth is a life-rich water-world, our smaller neighbour Mars lost much of its atmosphere early in its history, transforming from a warm and wet environment to the cold and arid plains that we observe today. By contrast, Earth’s other neighbour Venus, which although inhospitable today is comparable in size to our own planet, and has a dense atmosphere.

One way that is often thought to help protect a planet’s atmosphere is through an internally generated magnetic field, such as at Earth. The magnetic field deflects charged particles of the solar wind as they stream away from the Sun, carving out a protective ‘bubble’ – the magnetosphere – around the planet.

At Mars and Venus, which don’t generate an internal magnetic field, the main obstacle to the solar wind is the upper atmosphere, or ionosphere. Just as on Earth, solar ultraviolet radiation separates electrons from the atoms and molecules in this region, creating a region of electrically charged – ionised – gas: the ionosphere. At Mars and Venus this ionised layer interacts directly with the solar wind and its magnetic field to create an induced magnetosphere, which acts to slow and divert the solar wind around the planet.

For 14 years, ESA’s Mars Express has been looking at charged ions, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, flowing out to space in order to better understand the rate at which the atmosphere is escaping the planet.

Ion escape at Mars
The study has uncovered a surprising effect, with the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation playing a more important role than previously thought.

“We used to think that the ion escape occurs due to an effective transfer of the solar wind energy through the martian induced magnetic barrier to the ionosphere,” says Robin Ramstad of the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, and lead author of the Mars Express study.

“Perhaps counter-intuitively, what we actually see is that the increased ion production triggered by ultraviolet solar radiation shields the planet’s atmosphere from the energy carried by the solar wind, but very little energy is actually required for the ions to escape by themselves, due to the low gravity binding the atmosphere to Mars.”

The ionising nature of the Sun’s radiation is found to produce more ions than can be removed by the solar wind. Although the increased ion production helps to shield the lower atmosphere from the energy carried by the solar wind, the heating of the electrons appears to be sufficient to drag along ions under all conditions, creating a ‘polar wind’. Mars’ weak gravity – about one third that of Earth’s – means the planet cannot hold on to these ions and they readily escape into space, regardless of the extra energy supplied by a strong solar wind.

At Venus, where the gravity is similar to Earth’s, a lot more energy is required to strip the atmosphere in this way, and ions leaving the sunward side would likely fall back towards the planet on the lee-side unless they are accelerated further.

“We therefore conclude that in the present day, ion escape from Mars is primarily production-limited, and not energy-limited, whereas at Venus it is likely to be energy-limited given the larger planet’s higher gravity and high rate of ionisation, being nearer to the Sun,” adds Robin.

“In other words, the solar wind likely only had a very small direct effect on the amount of Mars atmosphere that has been lost over time, and rather only enhances the acceleration of already escaping particles.”

“Continuous monitoring of Mars since 2004, which covered the change in solar activity from solar minimum to maximum, gives us a large dataset that is vital in understanding the long-term behaviour of a planet’s atmosphere and its interaction with the Sun,” says Dmitri Titov, ESA’s Mars Express project scientist. “Collaboration with NASA’s MAVEN mission, which has been at Mars since 2014, is also allowing us to study the atmospheric escape processes in more detail.”

The study also has implications for the search for Earth-like atmospheres elsewhere in the Universe.

“Perhaps a magnetic field is not as important in shielding a planet’s atmosphere as the planet’s gravity itself, which defines how well it can hang on to its atmospheric particles after they have been ionised by the Sun’s radiation, regardless of the power of the solar wind,” adds Dmitri.

La réalité est l’ensemble des phénomènes considérés comme existant effectivement. Ce concept désigne donc ce qui est physique, concret, par opposition à ce qui est imaginé, rêvé ou fictif1. Si son usage est initialement philosophique, particulièrement dans sa branche ontologique, il a intégré le langage courant et donné lieu à des usages spécifiques, notamment en science.

Étymologie

Le terme français réalité, tout comme ses équivalents anglais (reality), allemand (Realität), suédois (realitet), italien (realtà) ou espagnols (realidad) dérive d'un mot forgé au XIIIe siècle par le philosophe scolastique Duns Scot : la realitas.

Construit à partir du latin res, la chose, ce concept désigne alors à la fois le principe et l’actualité d'un objet donné. Dans la tradition scotiste, la réalité d'une pierre comprend à la fois son essence (l'idée de pierre qui permet d'identifier toutes les pierres existantes) et son concret (cette pierre en particulier)2.

Un scholiaste de Duns Scot, Pierre Auriol note ainsi que « le terme « chose » se prend en deux acceptions : d'une part au sens d'une chose essentielle, — et alors il n'est pas vrai que l'être de la pierre ne soit que sa réalité —, d'autre part au sens de la réalité actuelle, et alors cela est vrai ; il en résulte que dans la pierre existant effectivement, il y a deux réalités, (l'une essentielle, la pierréité, et l'autre accidentelle, à savoir l'actualité). »3.

L'acception scotiste de la réalité domine la pensée européenne jusqu'à la fin du XVIIe siècle. Publié en 1692, le Lexicon rationale seu thesaurus philosophicus d'Étienne Chauvin ne voit dans ce terme qu'une caractéristique de l’entièreté de la chose. « la doctrine des Scotistes »4. Des acceptions concurrentes ont pourtant déjà émergé plus tôt dans le siècle. Dans sa Troisième méditation, René Descartes développe le thème d'une réalité objective très éloignée de la realitas des scotistes : la réalité objective c'est tout ce qui se distingue à la fois de la fiction et de « l'être de raison ». La réalité objective de l'idée désigne ainsi ce processus mental de représentation qui attache une idée à une chose positive5.

Les sensualistes anglais radicalisent l'approche cartésienne. Chez George Berkeley la reality devient presque synonyme d’effectivity. Dans son Traité de la nature humaine, David Hume oppose clairement le réel au possible : appartient au réel non pas ce qui peut exister, mais ce qui existe effectivement6.
Réalité : essence et sensible

Pour les philosophes de l’Antiquité, la réalité est manifeste dans deux mondes : celui des essences, et celui du sensible.

La réalité du monde des essences est en particulier le domaine de la métaphysique et des religions.

Pour Platon, il faut dépasser l'apparence sensible, fugace et changeante des choses, pour accéder au monde des idées, qui fonde tout ce qui existe dans le monde sensible, et en permet la connaissance. L'apparence sensible est donc une forme d'illusion, en tout cas d'imperfection de l’archétype parfait. Kant en revanche considère que la réalité pour l’être humain n'est rien d'autre que celle qui lui apparaît, sa manifestation sensible ; elle est donc d’ordre phénoménal, la chose en soi étant, elle inconnaissable. Du coup, du fait de cette dissociation, la réalité n'est pas conçue comme identique ou équivalente à la vérité.

Le philosophe Karl Popper a proposé une approche différente de la réalité. Il a découpé le réel en trois mondes7 (Métaphysique des trois mondes) :

le monde 1 des objets physiques, vivants ou non
le monde 2 des ressentis et des vécus, conscients et inconscients
le monde 3 des productions objectives de l'esprit humain (aussi bien des objets que des théories, ou des œuvres d'art)

Selon cette approche, les contenus de pensée comme les rêves, les fictions, les théories font partie du réel. Le réel est donc pris dans un sens de « tout ce qui existe ». Cependant, Raynald Belay souligne dans le Dictionnaire des concepts philosophiques que « [m]ême si elle suppose conceptuellement l'identité, la permanence et l'univocité, la réalité ne peut être invoquée que sur le fond d'une différence première entre elle et ce dont on la distingue (apparence, phénomène, simulacre, rêve, illusion, idée ou idéal...), ce qui soulève une difficulté, puisque ce qui n'est pas la réalité et se confond parfois avec elle doit participer de celle-ci pour exiger cette discrimination. »8
Réalité et réel en psychanalyse

La psychanalyse étudie une « réalité psychique » associée à l'appareil psychique: elle donne le statut de réalité à l'esprit et l'étudie comme un lieu ou un appareil, composé de différents phénomènes, systèmes ou instances. Sigmund Freud compara par exemple cette réalité à une ville réunissant d'anciens monuments et des bâtiments modernes. La psychanalyse ne discrédite cependant pas l'idée d'une « réalité extérieure » ; il s'agit en fait de redonner sa place au psychique.[réf. nécessaire] La notion de relativité de la réalité est également étudiée par René Laforgue dans un ouvrage du même nom.

Pour Jacques Lacan, le réel est ce qui fait objection au savoir. Ainsi, la démarche de connaissance consiste à investiguer le réel pour bâtir un savoir qui constitue notre réalité. Le réel s'impose donc au sujet et est caractérisé par l'inquiétante étrangeté (Unheimlich). La réalité, quant à elle, relève de la dimension imaginaire.
La réalité dans les sciences
Max Planck

Pour Max Planck, « la question de savoir ce qu'est une table en réalité ne présente aucun sens. Il en va de même ainsi de toutes les notions physiques. L'ensemble du monde qui nous entoure ne constitue rien d'autre que la totalité des expériences que nous en avons. Sans elles, le monde extérieur n'a aucune signification. Toute question se rapportant au monde extérieur qui ne se fonde pas en quelque manière sur une expérience, une observation, est déclarée absurde et rejetée comme telle »9. Par conséquent, la couleur rouge est la réalité pour le voyant et n'est pas la réalité pour l'aveugle. La notion de réalité dépendant des expériences vécues, elle est donc nécessairement variable en fonction des individus.
Richard Dawkins

Richard Dawkins estime qu'on peut définir la réalité comme ce qui peut rendre les coups (« Reality is what can kick back »).[réf. nécessaire] C'est, selon lui, le seul critère qui permet de la distinguer, sans discussion possible, de l'illusion.

Cette définition particulière a pour effet de définir comme réelles :

La réalité virtuelle (ce qui justifie d'ailleurs l'emploi du terme de « réalité »)
Les nombres premiers; en effet, aucune décision arbitraire ne peut empêcher un nombre premier de l'être, ni deux personnes qui n'ont jamais communiqué ensemble et vivent sur deux continents différents de découvrir les mêmes sans jamais s'être concertés.

Cette position est voisine de celle de l'écrivain Philip K. Dick pour qui « la réalité, c'est ce qui continue à s'imposer à vous quand vous cessez d'y croire ».[réf. nécessaire]
La notion de réalité dans le constructivisme

Selon la pensée constructiviste, qui s'oppose partiellement au réalisme, la réalité serait une expérience inévitablement relative à celui qui l'appréhende. La connaissance ne permet pas, dans cette logique, d'accéder a une perception « plus vraie » des choses; elle serait plutôt une donnée, une réalité en soi, celle de l'expérience de ce qui est. Le constructivisme postule ainsi la réalité comme une construction de l'esprit qui resterait toujours relative à celui qui la perçoit comme une réalité.

Edgar Morin préfère parler de coconstructivisme pour éviter l'image d'une réalité issue d'une construction exclusivement mentale. Il exprime ainsi une « collaboration du monde extérieur et de notre esprit pour construire la réalité ».[réf. nécessaire]

En 1981, l'ouvrage collectif intitulé L'invention de la réalité10 présente ce qu'est le ressenti de la réalité, et explique également comment il peut évoluer. Cette exploration est établie sous la direction de Paul Watzlawick, psychologue analytique, jungien de formation, qui a lui-même écrit sur le sujet, en 1976, dans La réalité de la réalité11.

Dans le bouddhisme, qui avant d'être une « religion » fait partie des écoles hétérodoxes de la philosophie indienne, la réalité relative est différenciée de la réalité absolue qui est la vraie « nature » des phénomènes. Pour le bouddhisme, qui est une « voie moyenne » entre un « nihilisme » et un « éternalisme », cette nature ultime de la réalité est l'absence de soi ou d'égo (anatman), la vacuité. Il n'y a pas de chose qui existe en soi (ou absolument) pour un bouddhiste. Selon les écoles, l'accent sera mis davantage sur l'interdépendance des phénomènes, la non-dualité, sur l'esprit ou la conscience (citta, vijñāna) comme seule réalité (Cittamātra), sur la « nature de Bouddha », sur la Connaissance transcendante (Prajna), sur l'Éveil (bodhi), etc. Le bouddhisme theravāda affirme un dualisme (qui est d'ordre sotériologique plutôt qu'ontologique) entre d'une part les phénomènes conditionnés (et ultimement irréels : le saṃsāra) et d'autre part l'Absolu (seule réalité, "l'autre rive", Nibbāna), tandis que le bouddhisme mahāyāna affirme l'identité ultime des deux comme vacuité et non-dualité : "tous les dharma ont pour caractéristique la vacuité" (Sūtra du Cœur)12.

Le droit de grève en France est un droit à valeur constitutionnelle (alinéa 7 du Préambule de la Constitution de la Quatrième République) depuis la décision Liberté d'association rendue le 16 juillet 1971 par le Conseil constitutionnel (reconnaissance de la valeur constitutionnelle du Préambule de la Constitution de 1958). Ce droit, dans le secteur privé, n'est, en principe, autorisé qu'aux salariés1.

Dans un arrêt en date du 2 février 2006, la Chambre sociale de la Cour de cassation l'a défini comme la cessation collective, concertée et totale du travail en vue de présenter à l'employeur des revendications professionnelles2.

14 juin 1791 : instauration du délit de coalition par la loi Le Chapelier.

24 mai 1864 : abrogation du délit de coalition et instauration du droit de grève par Napoléon III avec la loi Ollivier, que suivra la loi Waldeck-Rousseau autorisant les syndicats en France (1884). Émile Ollivier et Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau étaient considérés comme des libéraux sous la IIIe République.

27 octobre 1946 : le droit de grève est pleinement reconnu dans la constitution (« Le droit de grève s'exerce dans le cadre des lois qui le réglementent », alinéa 7 du préambule).

Pré-requis

Pour être licite et pour que l'employé gréviste soit protégé, une grève doit remplir certaines conditions :

le mouvement de grève doit être collectif et concerté : à partir de deux personnes dans une entreprise quand cette dernière est seule concernée, ou à partir d'une personne dans le cadre d'un mouvement dépassant la seule entreprise ;
