Last week I set out Government’s plan to leave our environment in a better state than we found it. I urged supermarkets to introduce plastic-free aisles and Iceland have today said they will eliminate plastic packaging by 2023 – I hope others follow suit.

A UK supermarket will be the first in the world to remove plastic packaging from all of its own-label products.

Iceland's landmark move puts pressure on its rivals to follow suit amid public demands to turn back the tide of plastic pollution.

The company, which has more than 900 stores, has a five-year plan to ditch plastic from all of its own-brand products.

Packaging on 1,400 product lines will be replaced, and the changes involve more than 250 suppliers. First to go will be plastic ready meal trays in favour of wood-pulp alternatives made in Britain. Plastic bags used for frozen vegetables and other food will then be dropped in favour of paper alternatives.

Iceland, which has already removed plastic disposable straws from its own range, is also working on alternatives for plastic bottles and milk cartons.

Last week Theresa May set a 25-year deadline to banish 'avoidable' plastic and called on supermarkets to introduce plastic-free aisles.

Iceland's move – the latest victory for the Mail's Turn the Tide on Plastic campaign – suggests it is possible to go further and faster.

The switch from plastic will cost Iceland money, but it pledged there will be no corresponding rise in prices.

The company's move comes amid mounting concern about the impact of plastic packaging on the environment, and follows news that China will no longer take British waste plastic for recycling, meaning big business will have to clean up its own mess. The Mail has highlighted the huge amount of excess plastic packaging used by high street stores, and turned the spotlight on waste and blight associated with bags, microbeads, bottles and plastic-lined coffee cups.

Iceland is harnessing the latest technology to create new plant-based 'green' packaging options, which are fully recyclable through household waste collections.

Its new ready meal trays are wood pulp rather than plastic, and although they will initially be coated with a thin layer of plastic, the supermarket giant plans to replace this with a water-based, non-plastic spray coating.

Iceland cannot dictate the packaging used by the big food brands it stocks, but it will encourage them to switch away from plastic.

Recently, some of retail's biggest figures, including former bosses of Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Asda and Debenhams, signed a statement calling for an end to throwaway plastic packaging. They said: 'Over the past decade Britain's retailers have in the main focused on recycling in a bid to reduce the environmental impact of the plastic waste they produce.

'But we have to accept that this isn't enough – by recycling plastic, we are merely recycling the problem. It is therefore essential that retailers and packaging manufacturers work together to turn off the tap of throwaway packaging.'

Greenpeace executive director John Sauven last night congratulated Iceland on 'its bold pledge', adding: 'It's now up to other retailers and food producers to respond to that challenge.

'The tidal wave of plastic pollution will only start to recede when they turn off the tap. They know the scale of systemic change we need, and yet their responses have been timid and piecemeal. Iceland has offered a more radical solution that shows the way forward for the sector.'


Lidl wraps ONIONS in plastic

Lidl has been criticised for selling peeled onions in plastic packaging.

Customers have hit out at the supermarket for the 'pointless' use of wrapping on what it calls 'Ready to cook naked onions'.

Just last week, Marks & Spencer stopped selling a thick slice of cauliflower in a tray and wrapped in plastic after being shamed by customers.

Stores have also been criticised for selling coconuts in shrink-wrapped plastic and for making it increasingly difficult to buy fresh produce loose.

Customers yesterday expressed disgust at Lidl's own-brand 'naked onion' pack. Winnie Courtene-Jones, who posted an image of the vegetables, said: 'Found this #pointlessplastic monstrosity in @LidlUK this morning. Seriously?! Two peeled whole onions on a plastic tray wrapped in plastic film! Just no, I don't have words for this.'

David Rose described it as 'unacceptable', adding: 'Just as I was singing the praises of @LidlUK and their wonderful unwrapped veg, I come across this monstrosity – naked onions! Remove the perfectly good protection and then add plastic protection.'

Lidl said: 'To meet consumer demand and market trends, we are constantly exploring opportunities to enhance our product range. As such, this product, which is equivalent to pre-prepared options already available at other supermarkets, is being piloted in a select number of stores on a trial basis only.'

La pêche électrique, ce sont des chalutiers avec des filets équipés d’électrodes. De petites décharges électriques font sortir des fonds marins les poissons plats, comme les soles. Une pratique très efficace, prisée des Néerlandais, mais décriée par les défenseurs de l’environnement qui craignent notamment l’épuisement des stocks de poissons.  

Une technique interdite jusqu’en 2006, année où la Commission européenne lève cette interdiction et accorde des dérogations. Pourtant à l’époque, un comité scientifique sollicité par la Commission, préconise la plus grande prudence : "Bien que le développement de cette technologie ne doive pas être interrompu, plusieurs problématiques doivent être résolues avant d’accorder toute dérogation".

Bref, les scientifiques sont très réservés quant à cette pratique, comme nous le confirme Didier Gascuell, membre du comité scientifique : "Cet avis est très clair, il est prudent voire négatif sur le développement de cette technologie. Et pourtant dans les mois qui ont suivi, la Commission a accordé un certain nombre de dérogations.”

Pourquoi cet assouplissement de la législation ? Selon l’association écologiste Bloom qui a enquêté sur le sujet, la Commission européenne a cédé face au lobby de la pêche néerlandaise. Selon Claire Nouvian, présidente de Bloom, "c’est la volonté claire, nette et précise de donner raison à un lobby industriel d’un Etat membre, les Pays-Bas contre l’avis scientifique et contre l’intérêt général, c’est un manquement grave à la mission de la Commission européenne."

La Commission a-t-elle cédé sous la pression des lobbys ? Nous avons, à plusieurs reprises, sollicité le commissaire européen à la pêche, Karmenu Vella. Sans succès.

La commission nous a répondu par mail, réfutant avoir été influencée par des lobbys : "Les derniers avis scientifiques datant de 2012 et 2016 ont donné assez de preuves pour justifier l’abolition de la limite des navires pouvant utiliser la pêche électrique"

Ce soir, au sein du parlement européen, à la veille du vote qui pourrait généraliser cette technique, Pim Wisser, lobbyiste représentant des pêcheurs néerlandais, organise une conférence. Le but, convaincre les députés de l’intérêt de la pêche électrique : "Nous avons envoyé beaucoup d’emails, pour informer sur ce qui est vrai et ce qui est faux concernant la pêche électrique. Nous avons utilisé au maximum notre liberté d’informer.”.

Les députés européens voteront-ils pour la généralisation de la pêche électrique. Réponse demain après-midi, à Strasbourg.

Le Parlement européen s'est prononcé mardi pour l'interdiction de la pêche électrique, qui provoque, selon ses détracteurs, une hécatombe parmi les fonds marins. Ce vote est une étape sur le long parcours législatif du texte au sein de l'UE.

Les eurodéputés se sont prononcés, mardi 16 janvier, contre une autorisation de la pêche électrique dans l’Union européenne (UE), une méthode très contestée, notamment en France, et accusée de détruire l’écosystème des fonds marins.

Le Parlement européen s’oppose donc à la dérogation proposée par la Commission, qui veut autoriser cette pratique à une plus large échelle en mer du Nord, où elle est permise à titre expérimental. Ce vote est une étape sur le long parcours législatif du texte au sein de l'UE. Le Parlement va maintenant entrer en négociation avec le Conseil (les États membres) et la Commission pour trouver un compromis final.

La Commission proposait de supprimer la restriction imposée aux flottes des États membres, établie à titre d'expérimentation. Celle-ci limite à 5 % de la flotte, dans chaque pays concerné, les chalutiers autorisés à s'équiper pour la pêche électrique. L'exécutif européen souhaitait en revanche maintenir la zone géographique dans laquelle ce type de pêche est limité, au sud de la mer du Nord.

"Une très belle victoire"

Les amendements votés lundi à une large majorité (402 pour, 232 contre et 40 abstentions), lors de la séance plénière du Parlement, font sauter toute dérogation. Il s’agit d’une victoire pour les élus français, de tous bords, qui avaient pris la tête de la contestation. Le ministre de la Transition écologique et solidaire, Nicolas Hulot, a salué le vote du parlement européen via son compte Twitter.

"C'est une très belle victoire contre une pêche terriblement néfaste, une véritable arme de prédation massive", s'est réjoui dans un communiqué le député vert Yannick Jadot, qui fait partie des eurodéputés à la pointe de la contestation contre la pêche électrique.

La généralisation de la pêche électrique "décime les poissons, sacrifie les pêcheurs, désertifie nos territoires côtiers", a martelé lundi soir, lors d'un débat précédent le vote, Yannick Jadot. À l'inverse, une interdiction protège les ressources, "nous sauvons la pêche artisanale et nous avons de beaux et bons poissons dans nos assiettes", a-t-il plaidé.

UK-France space co-operation at Sandhurst Summit

The UK Space Agency and CNES signed a joint statement to step up co-operation in space, at the UK-France Summit in Sandhurst today (Thursday 18 January).

The statement focuses on projects for climate action, Mars exploration, space applications and Europe’s space programme.

Since the signature of the Brize Norton framework arrangement on 31 January 2014, French-UK space co-operation has achieved many things, notably in the fields of Earth observation and climate action. For example, the UK Space Agency is working with CNES to develop the IASI-NG (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer New Generation) instrument for Eumetsat’s programme to improve weather forecasts.

An agreement has also been signed to enable the UK space Agency to participate in CNES’s contribution to the SWOT (Surface Water & Ocean Topography) mission being pursued jointly with NASA. France and the United Kingdom are also teaming on the MicroCarb programme to monitor and map sources and sinks of carbon gases.

The statement signed today proposes to step up co-operation in space between France and the United Kingdom.

The UK and France play leading roles in global efforts to explore the solar system and use satellite technologies to improve life on Earth. From missions to Mars to cutting-edge climate measurements from space, we want to build on the successful history of close collaboration for the benefit of both our nations.

Since the signature of the Brize Norton framework arrangement, space cooperation between France and the United Kingdom has gone from strength to strength. The statement signed today is set to consolidate and extend our collaboration, in particular our joint efforts to tackle climate change through the IASI-NG, SWOT and MicroCarb projects.

Closer cooperation will notably cover work on climate science and space systems in support of the implementation of a Space Climate Observatory (SCO), set out in the Paris Declaration adopted by the world’s heads of space agencies at the One Planet Summit.

A future partnership between the two nations on Mars exploration is also under consideration for technology developments in autonomous navigation of the ExoMars mission rover.

In the field of applications and innovations leveraging space data and technologies, CNES and the UK Space Agency are keen to nurture space hubs and ecosystems that will help to support humanitarian relief efforts around the globe in response to the increasing number of natural disasters being fuelled by climate change.

The two nations feel that technical and scientific exchanges should continue in order to further explore areas of possible future cooperation.

The Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite takes us over part of northern Brazil’s Marajó island in Pará state.

Sediments discharged by the nearby Amazon River mouth (not pictured) are visible in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean north of the island.

The land area pictured is dominated by a savannah landscape, with mangrove forests and palm swamps along the coast. The area is known for its large plantations – called fazendas – with animal husbandry. Although not native to the island, domesticated water buffalo outnumber Marajó’s human population.

‘Popcorn’ clouds are visible in the upper part of the image, formed by convection and condensed water vapour released by plants and trees during the sunny day. On the left side of the image we can see Lake Arari, the size of which fluctuates greatly between the rainy and dry seasons.

Sentinel-2 images Earth in 13 spectral channels. Scientists can select which wavelength combinations to process over a given area to help better understand targets on the ground.

The channel combination used to create this image, which was acquired on 20 July 2017, is particularly useful for identifying different vegetation types and helps us to distinguish it very clearly from inland water bodies: water appears dark blue, while vegetation appears in a variety of bright colours.
