ESA is developing a new family of missions called Sentinels specifically
for the operational needs of the Copernicus programme.

Each Sentinel mission is based on a constellation of two satellites
to fulfil revisit and coverage requirements, providing robust datasets
for Copernicus Services.

These missions carry a range of technologies, such as radar
and multi-spectral imaging instruments for land,
ocean and atmospheric monitoring:

Sentinel-1 is a polar-orbiting, all-weather, day-and-night radar imaging mission
for land and ocean services. Sentinel-1A was launched on 3 April 2014
and Sentinel-1B on 25 April 2016. Both were taken into orbit on a Soyuz rocket
from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.

Sentinel-2 is a polar-orbiting, multispectral high-resolution imaging mission
for land monitoring to provide, for example, imagery of vegetation,
soil and water cover, inland waterways and coastal areas. Sentinel-2 can
also deliver information for emergency services. Sentinel-2A was launched
on 23 June 2015 and Sentinel-2B followed on 7 March 2017.

Sentinel family

Sentinel-3 is a multi-instrument mission to measure sea-surface topography,
sea- and land-surface temperature, ocean colour
and land colour with high-end accuracy and reliability.
The mission will support ocean forecasting systems, as well as
environmental and climate monitoring. Sentinel-3A was launched
on 16 February 2016.

Sentinel-5 Precursor – also known as Sentinel-5P – is the forerunner
of Sentinel-5 to provide timely data on a multitude of trace gases
and aerosols affecting air quality and climate. It was developed
to reduce data gaps between the Envisat satellite –
in particular the Sciamachy instrument – and the launch
of Sentinel-5.

Sentinel-4 is a payload devoted to atmospheric monitoring
that will be embarked upon a Meteosat Third Generation-Sounder
(MTG-S) satellite in geostationary orbit.

Sentinel-5 is a payload that will monitor the atmosphere
from polar orbit aboard a MetOp Second Generation satellite.

Sentinel-6 carries a radar altimeter
to measure global sea-surface height, primarily
for operational oceanography and
for climate studies.

With Sentinel-5 Precursor about to be packed up and shipped
to Russia for liftoff in late September, media representatives, members
of the UK Space Agency and National Centre for Earth Observation
had the chance to see this Copernicus air-pollution monitoring satellite
standing proud in the cleanroom.

Sentinel-5 Precursor – also known as Sentinel-5P –
is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere.

It has been built to map a multitude of trace gases such
as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane
that affect air quality.

The satellite will help to identify pollution hotspots
where public health could be at risk. It will also contribute
to services that warn of high levels of UV radiation,
which can cause skin cancer, and volcanic ash monitoring
for aviation safety.

Carrying the Tropomi instrument, the most advanced of its kind,
Sentinel-5P will map the entire planet every 24 hours.
The availability of accurate and up-to-date information will help
decision-makers to fight air pollution and climate change.

Sentinel-5P is the forerunner of the Sentinel-5 mission to be carried
on the MetOp Second Generation satellites that will be launched
in a few years. Until then Sentinel-5P will deliver much needed information
to monitor and track air pollution.

The media event was held at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage,
UK, where the satellite was built and tested.

ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes,
Josef Aschbacher, said, “It’s wonderful to see the satellite
in all its glory, and it’s thanks to a truly collaborative effort
that it will take the EC’s Copernicus programme into
a new era of atmospheric monitoring.

“ESA is very grateful to the Netherlands
for its substantial contribution to the Tropomi instrument.
The mission as a whole was designed and built by a consortium
of 30 companies under the leadership of Airbus Defence and Space.”

Nico van Putten, Deputy Director of the Netherlands Space Office,
added, “The development and the implementation
of the top-notch Tropomi instrument for Sentinel-5P is thanks
to the remarkable close cooperation between different entities
from all over Europe.

“As a Dutch institution we are proud to contribute to this marvel
of space technology, which will now help to tackle global challenges,
making Europe even stronger in Earth observation.”

Pepijn Veefkind from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute,
KNMI, added, “Every day, Tropomi will make almost 20 million observations
of important air pollutants and gases affecting the climate.

“KNMI will use this data to improve air-quality forecasts and
to keep a close eye on emission increases or reductions, and
to monitor what mitigation measures are effective in protecting
the air we breathe.”

Engineers will now prepare the satellite for shipment
to the Plesetsk launch site in Russia. Once there it will be thoroughly
tested and prepared for launch in late September.

Media are invited to see the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite on 20 July
at Airbus in Stevenage, UK, before it is shipped to Russia for launch.
As well as viewing this state-of-the-art Copernicus satellite
in the cleanroom, media representatives will be able to learn how
the mission will revolutionise air-quality monitoring.

With air pollution a major environmental health problem
that affects people in developed and developing countries alike,
it has never been more important to monitor the air we breathe.
Sentinel-5P has been built to map a multitude of trace gases such
as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane
that affect air quality.

The satellite will help to identify pollution hotspots where public
health could be at risk. It will also contribute to services
that warn of high levels of UV radiation, which can cause skin cancer,
and volcanic ash monitoring for aviation safety.

Carrying the Tropomi instrument, the most advanced of its kind,
Sentinel-5P will map the entire planet every 24 hours.

While Tropomi was developed jointly by ESA
and the Netherlands Space Office, the mission was built by
a consortium of 30 companies under the leadership of Airbus,
both in the UK and in the Netherlands – and realised thanks
to close collaboration between ESA and European Commission.

Sentinel-5P will join five other Sentinel satellites in orbit as part
of Europe’s environmental monitoring programme. It will be launched
in September from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia.

This is the last chance to see this latest Copernicus satellite
before it heads off to the launch site. The event starts at 10:00 GMT
(11:00 BST) and includes briefings by ESA Director of Earth Observation Programmes
Josef Aschbacher, Airbus and the Netherlands Space Office.

There will be an opportunity to film and photograph the satellite
in the cleanroom and do interviews in front as the final elements
are fitted and tested. If you would like to enter the cleanroom
please say so when registering (entry is limited). All equipment must be
cleaned prior to arrival and inspected before entry.

Please arrive by 09:30 GMT (10:30 BST) to clear security.
The talks will be followed by a Q&A, lunch and interview opportunities.
The event closes at 12:00 GMT (13:00 BST).

La Cigogne blanche est en général plutôt silencieuse.
On peut entendre quelques sons gutturaux quand elle se pose au nid,
ou un sifflement si elle est dérangée ou en alerte.
Mais les sons les plus classiques ne sont pas des expressions vocales,
mais de rapides claquements de bec bien rythmés,
souvent entendus près ou dans les nids.
Habitat

La Cigogne blanche habite des zones ouvertes et dégagées
de cultures et pâturages, les prairies humides et les plaines
bordant le cours des rivières, les vergers et champs irrigués.
Certaines populations sont résidentes à l'année si la nourriture
est suffisante.
Comportement traits de caractère

Les Cigognes blanches se nourrissent en groupes si elles nichent
les unes près des autres. La Cigogne blanche peut rester longtemps
posée sur une seule patte, lissant son plumage, sur un arbre, un haut édifice,
au sol ou le plus souvent, dans son nid. Elle marche lentement, de façon majestueuse.
Un mâle qui arrive à un nid commence à le refaire immédiatement,
et il attend l'arrivée de la femelle, quelques jours plus tard.
Le couple est uni pour la vie.
La parade nuptiale comprend de curieuses postures, en plus
des claquements de bec habituels.
Le comportement migratoire des cigognes varie avec l'âge.
La maturité sexuelle est atteinte à l'âge de 4 ou 5 ans.
Le vol : La Cigogne blanche bat lentement des ailes, plane
et remonte dans les courants thermiques jusqu'à grande hauteur.
Alimentation mode et régime

La Cigogne blanche se nourrit de grenouilles, têtards, lézards,
anguilles, vers de terre, couleuvres, poissons, sauterelles, mollusques,
escargots, crustacés divers, poussins et œufs de petits oiseaux,
et petits mammifères.
Reproduction nidification

Le nid de la Cigogne blanche est toujours placé dans des lieux hauts
et découverts, faciles d'accès pour ces grands oiseaux.
On les trouve sur des tours, des clochers, des pylônes,
des arbres où plusieurs nids peuvent se côtoyer.
Ces nids sont employés année après année.
Les cigognes rajoutent de nouveaux matériaux,
donnant parfois des volumes énormes.
La femelle dépose en général 4 œufs blancs et brillants,
à raison d'un tous les deux jours.
L'incubation commence au premier ou au second œuf pondu,
partagée entre les deux parents, la femelle pendant la nuit,
et le couple pendant la journée. L'incubation dure environ 32 à 34 jours.
Les deux adultes nourrissent les jeunes par régurgitation
dans le nid où les poussins picorent. À l'âge de deux ou trois semaines,
les jeunes sont nourris toutes les deux heures.
Le premier vol a lieu à l'âge de 55 à 60 jours.

C'est l'une des espèces européennes qui a subi un des déclins
les plus rapides au 20ème siècle, même si au sud de son aire
de répartition (France et péninsule Ibérique) cette tendance
semble être inversée. La régression de l'espèce est liée principalement
à la disparition des lieux d'alimentation et de reproduction,
les collisions, les électrocutions avec les lignes électriques
et les conditions catastrophiques dans les quartiers d'hiver
en Afrique. L'emploi des pesticides leur est défavorable
car elles les ingèrent en consommant des insectes
et des rongeurs.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY

The NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Solar System Ambassadors Program (SSA) invites you to apply to become an ambassador to the public for calendar year 2018.

Highly motivated individuals will be given the opportunity to represent NASA and JPL as volunteer Solar System Ambassadors for a one-year, renewable term beginning January 1, 2018. Applications will be accepted through September 30, 2017. Selections will be announced in early December, with successful candidates beginning their year of service after completing online Orientation and Ethics trainings in January.

While applications will be sought across the United States, interested parties from the following areas are especially encouraged to apply: Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. SSA hopes to add at least 100 new volunteers to the program in 2018.

The Solar System Ambassadors Program is a public engagement effort accomplished by space enthusiast volunteers across the nation who communicate NASA's exciting discoveries and plans for future exploration of the solar system and beyond to general public audiences. Ambassadors become an extended part of each mission's team and an important interface between the NASA community and the populace at large.

Background

Currently, volunteers from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, District of Columbia and US Virgin Islands are serving under this program as local representatives for NASA's space exploration missions, such as Cassini, Voyager, Mars missions (including the Curiosity rover), Dawn, STEREO, Earth Missions, New Horizons, International Space Station, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Hubble Space Telescope, OSIRIS-REx and the Deep Space Network.

The Solar System Ambassadors Program aims to engage these highly-motivated volunteers who have the means and initiative to share the excitement of space exploration in standard and diverse ways within their local communities. By leveraging their established connections, Ambassadors reach broad sectors of the general public that are often unaware of NASA's ongoing exploration. Ambassadors' enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, space exploration personalizes the experience of learning about our neighborhood in space, our home planet and the universe beyond.

Training and Equipping Ambassadors

Ambassadors participate in online (telephone and web-based) training sessions which acquaint them with NASA's space exploration missions and provide interaction with scientists, engineers and project team members. These training sessions educate Ambassadors about SSA rules of operation, provide them with solid, general background on NASA's efforts exploring space, and supply materials needed to support specific mission milestones, such as launches, planetary flybys, first image returns, arrivals, and ongoing key discoveries. In addition to online materials, training archives and resource links, Ambassadors are provided hard-copy materials, whenever available, to aid them in their efforts.

Ambassadors' Role

Collectively, the direct interaction with NASA and JPL personnel, ongoing training, support and materials provided by the SSA program, lays the foundation for Ambassadors' successful planning and execution of community-based events. Armed with inspiration and knowledge, Ambassadors spread this excitement throughout their local areas, personalizing the NASA experience for hundreds of thousands of people. By imparting their knowledge, energy and enthusiasm for space exploration, Ambassadors serve as key members of the agency's public engagement team.

Ambassadors' Responsibility

Solar System Ambassadors are asked to arrange, conduct and report at least four (4) community-based events per year, or roughly one event every three months.

Hello and welcome! I'm Jane Houston Jones from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory
in Pasadena, California.

On September 15 the Cassini spacecraft ends its glorious Saturnian science
tour by plunging into the atmosphere of Saturn, becoming forever
a part of the ringed planet.

This month Saturn is the only prominent evening planet low
in the southwest sky. Look for it near the constellation Sagittarius.
Above and below Saturn--from a dark sky--you can't miss the summer
Milky Way spanning the sky from northeast to southwest. Grab a pair
of binoculars and scan the teapot-shaped Sagittarius, where stars
and some brighter clumps appear as steam from the teapot.
Those bright clumps are near the center of our galaxy,
which is full of gas, dust and stars.

Directly overhead is the great Summer Triangle of stars. Vega,
Altair and Deneb are in the pretty constellations Lyra,
Aquila and Cygnus.

As you gaze toward the northeast you'll see Cassiopeia,
the familiar W-shaped constellation...and Perseus. Through your binoculars,
look for the Perseus Double Cluster. Both of the clusters are visible
with the naked eye, are 7500 light years away, and contain more
than 300 blue-white super-giant stars!

Every star and every object you can see with your unaided eye
is part of the Milky Way. With one exception: the great Andromeda galaxy,
which is faintly visible
through binoculars on the opposite side of the night sky from Saturn
and the teapot.

Description

Cassini gazes across the icy rings of Saturn toward
the icy moon Tethys, whose night side is illuminated by Saturnshine,
or sunlight reflected by the planet.

Tethys was brightened by a factor of two in this image
to increase its visibility. A sliver of the moon's sunlit northern
hemisphere is seen at top. A bright wedge of Saturn's sunlit side
is seen at lower left. The image was taken in visible light with
the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on 13 May 2017.

The view was acquired at a distance of approximately
1.2 million kilometres from Saturn. Image scale is 70 kilometres
per pixel on Saturn. The distance to Tethys was about 1.5 million kilometres.
The image scale on Tethys is about 90 kilometres per pixel.

The Cassini Solstice Mission is a joint United States and European endeavor.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology
in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission
Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter was designed,
developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team consists
of scientists from the US, England, France, and Germany.
The imaging operations center and team lead (Dr. C. Porco)
are based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Le parc national volcanique de Lassen (en anglais : Lassen Volcanic National Park),
parfois appelé parc national Lassen Volcanic, est un parc national américain
caractérisé par ses paysages volcaniques. Couvrant une superficie de 429 km2,
il est situé dans une zone montagneuse et boisée au nord de la Californie
à la jonction des comtés de Lassen, Plumas, Shasta et Tehama.

La région est soumise à une activité volcanique depuis plusieurs millions
d'années mais l'histoire géologique récente du parc est liée au pic Lassen,
un volcan de la chaîne des Cascades (Cascade Range)
devenu célèbre à la suite de son éruption de 1915.

Les Amérindiens peuplent la région depuis plusieurs milliers d'années
et y vivent de la cueillette et de la chasse. Les premiers Européens
s'installent dans la région au début du XIXe siècle. Le nom du parc
est un hommage à Peter Lassen, un immigrant d'origine danoise,
qui en 1848 aide des colons désireux de se rendre en Californie
à traverser la région.

La zone est classée le 6 mai 1907 sous la forme de deux monuments
nationaux dénommés Cinder Cone National Monument et Lassen Peak
National Monument. C'est le 9 août 1916 que la zone est finalement
élevée au rang de parc national à la suite de l'éruption spectaculaire
du pic Lassen l'année précédente. Depuis, le National Park Service
est chargé de la protection de ses richesses géologiques, naturelles
et culturelles, qui attirent chaque année près de 400 000 visiteurs.

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image showcases
the remarkable galaxy UGC 12591. UGC 12591 sits somewhere
between a lenticular and a spiral. It lies just under
400 million light-years away from us in the westernmost region
of the Pisces–Perseus Supercluster, a long chain of galaxy clusters
that stretches out for hundreds of millions of light-years —
one of the largest known structures in the cosmos.

The galaxy itself is also extraordinary: it is incredibly massive.
The galaxy and its halo together contain several hundred billion
times the mass of the sun; four times the mass of the Milky Way.
It also whirls round extremely quickly, rotating at speeds of up
to 1.8 million kilometers (1.1 million miles) per hour.

Observations with Hubble are helping astronomers to understand
the mass of UGC 12591, and to determine whether the galaxy simply
formed and grew slowly over time, or whether it might have grown
