ECRIT DU CITOYEN TIGNARD YANIS The Farthest Operating Spacecraft, Voyagers 1 and 2, Still Exploring 40 Years Later - Teachable Moments | NASA/JPL Edu Teachable Moments| August 29, 2017 The Farthest Operating Spacecraft, Voyagers 1 and 2, Still Exploring 40 Years Later In the News This year marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of the world’s farthest and longest-lived spacecraft, NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2. Four decades ago, they embarked on an ambitious mission to explore the giant outer planets, the two outermost of which had never been visited. And since completing their flybys of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune in 1989, they have been journeying toward the farthest reaches of our solar system – where no spacecraft has been before. These two intrepid spacecraft continue to return data to NASA daily, offering a window into the mysterious outer realms of our solar system and beyond. How They Did It The Voyager spacecraft were launched during a very short window that took advantage of a unique alignment of the four giant outer planets – one that would not occur again for another 176 years. (Try this lesson in calculating launch windows to get an idea of how it was done.) Launching at this point in time enabled the spacecraft to fly by all four planets in a single journey, returning never-before-seen, close-up images and scientific data from Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune that greatly contributed to our current understanding of these planets and the solar system. Why It’s Important diagram of solar system components These images of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune (clockwise from top) were taken by Voyager 1 and 2 as the spacecraft journeyed through the solar system. See a gallery of images that Voyager took on the Voyager website. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech In addition to shaping our understanding of the outer planets, the Voyager spacecraft are helping us learn more about the space beyond the planets – the outer region of our solar system. After completing their “grand tour” of the outer planets, the Voyagers continued on an extended mission to the outer solar system. They are now more than 10 billion miles from Earth, exploring the boundary region between our planetary system and what’s called interstellar space. The beginning of interstellar space is where the constant flow of material from the Sun and its magnetic field stop influencing the surroundings. Most of the Sun’s influence is contained within the heliosphere, a bubble created by the Sun and limited by forces in interstellar space. (Note that the heliosphere doesn’t actually look like a sphere when it travels through space; it’s more of a blunt sphere with a tail.) The outer edge of the heliosphere, before interstellar space, is a boundary region called the heliopause. The heliopause is the outermost boundary of the solar wind, a stream of electrically charged atoms, composed primarily of ionized hydrogen, that stream outward from the Sun. Our planetary system lies inside the bubble of the heliosphere, bordered by the heliopause and surrounded by interstellar space. Though we’ve learned a lot about the heliopause thanks to the Voyager spacecraft, its thickness and variation are still key unanswered questions in space physics. As the Voyagers continue their journey, scientists hope to learn more about the location and properties of the heliopause. From their unique vantage points – Voyager 1 in the northern hemisphere and Voyager 2 in the southern hemisphere – the spacecraft have already detected differences and asymmetries in the solar wind termination shock, where the wind abruptly slows as it approaches the heliopause. For example, Voyager 2 crossed the termination shock at a distance of about 83.7 AU in the southern hemisphere. (One AU, or astronomical unit, is equal to 150 kilometers (93 million miles), the distance between Earth and the Sun.) That’s about 10 AU closer to the Sun than where Voyager 1 crossed the shock in the north. As shown in this diagram, Voyager 1 traveled through the compressed “nose” of the termination shock and Voyager 2 is expected to travel through the flank of the termination shock. With four remaining powered instruments on Voyager 1 and five remaining powered instruments on Voyager 2, the two spacecraft continue to collect science data comparing their two distinct locations at the far reaches of the solar system. diagram of solar system components In August 2012, Voyager 1 detected a dramatic increase in galactic cosmic rays (as shown in this animated chart). The increase, which has continued to the current peak, was associated with the spacecraft's crossing into interstellar space. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Since it launched from Earth in 1977, Voyager 1 has been using an instrument to measure high-energy, dangerous particles traveling through space called galactic cosmic rays. While studying the interaction between the bubble of the heliosphere and interstellar space, Voyager 1 revealed that the heliosphere is functioning as a radiation shield, protecting our planetary system from most of these galactic cosmic rays. So in August 2012, when Voyager 1 detected a dramatic increase in the rays, which has continued to the current peak, it was associated with the spacecraft’s crossing into interstellar space. Meanwhile, Voyager 2 – which is still in the heliosheath, the outermost layer of the heliosphere between the shock and the heliopause – is using its solar wind instrument to measure the directional change of solar wind particles there. Within the next few years, Voyager 2 is also expected to cross into interstellar space, providing us with even more detailed data about this mysterious region. In another 10 years, we expect one or both Voyagers to cruise outward into a more pristine region of interstellar space, returning data to inform our hypotheses about the concentration of galactic particles and the characteristics of interstellar wind. Even with 40 years of space flight behind them, the Voyagers are expected to continue returning valuable data until about 2025. Communications will be maintained until the spacecraft’s nuclear power sources can no longer supply enough electrical energy to power critical functions. Until then, there’s still much to learn about the boundary of our heliosphere and what lies beyond in the space between the stars. To commemorate the journey, NASA endowed each spacecraft with a time capsule of sorts called the Golden Record intended to communicate the story of our world to extraterrestrials. Both Voyagers carry the 12-inch, gold-plated copper phonograph record containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. In this video, the water traveling radially away from where the faucet stream impacts the sink represents the solar wind. The termination shock is the point at which the speed of the solar wind (water) drops abruptly as it begins to be influenced by interstellar wind. The outer edge of the thick ring of water at the bottom of the sink represents the heliopause. Just like the water in the sink, the solar wind at the heliopause changes direction and flows back into the heliosphere. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech. | RETOUR SUR TERRE ET OBSERVONS LES CORRESPONDANCES. REGARD DU CITOYEN TIGNARD YANIS NASA Working with Partners to Provide Harvey Response NASA is using its assets and expertise from across the agency, including from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, to help respond to Hurricane Harvey -- now Tropical Storm Harvey -- which has been a disaster of unprecedented proportions for those who live and work in Southeast Texas. With no atmospheric steering mechanism to move the storm once it made landfall, Harvey has been producing rainfall totals measured in feet, rather than inches, presenting exceptional challenges to local, state and federal emergency managers and first responders. "This is an immense weather event that is creating a unique challenge," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate at the agency's headquarters in Washington. "NASA is working to enable and enhance the capabilities of our partners across federal agencies and elsewhere to ensure they are able to do the best job possible in assessing the threat and providing rescue and response services." For more NASA resources on Harvey and other tropical systems, visit: www.nasa.gov/hurricaneAt the forefront of the agency's efforts, the NASA Earth Science Disasters Team is providing support to local, state and federal agencies in their response to the extreme flooding in the Houston area and related damage associated with Harvey. As a result of this team's activation, scientists at NASA centers and external partners are working closely with the state of Texas, the United States Geological Survey Hazards Data Distribution System, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Guard and other partners to leverage their science and application experience to provide analysis of satellite imagery, output products and other decision-support aids to inform disaster mapping and response efforts. Coordination so far has included the generation and distribution of flood maps, using NASA analyses applied to data from several synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instruments on international partner satellites. The orbiting SAR instruments penetrate clouds and operate day and night, providing detailed, high-resolution, all-weather imagery of Earth's surface. NASA's partners tasked their spacecraft to make measurements of Southeastern Texas after the United States activated the humanitarian International Charter on Space and Major Disasters. Feedback from FEMA and other responders indicates these maps have been helpful in confirming coastal and river flood depths and identifying areas where inundation may be ongoing. As another example, NASA's Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission team has produced rainfall accumulation graphics and unique views of the structure of Harvey during various phases of development and landfall. GPM products help to identify the center of circulation and intense eyewall convection, and these images are provided to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) National Hurricane Center via NASA's Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center and the Naval Research Laboratory. Based at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, SPoRT is a project to transition unique observations and research capabilities to the operational weather community to improve short-term forecasts on a regional scale. In addition, NASA's Land Information System developed at the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and operated at Marshall, is being used to track soil moisture information relevant to flooding and agricultural impacts. This involves incorporating real-time satellite data that includes vegetation health and an experimental version that assimilates soil moisture data from NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. SMAP is managed for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington by JPL, with instrument hardware and science contributions made by NASA Goddard. Starting Thursday, NASA will fly the JPL-managed Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) instrument aboard a NASA Gulfstream-III aircraft to collect higher spatial resolution SAR observations over rivers, flood plains and critical infrastructure. The response team also will use other SAR data of opportunity, including the ESA's (European Space Agency's) Sentinel 1A and 1B mission SAR data made available through ESA open-data sharing to support flood response efforts. The Gulfstream-III aircraft is operated and managed by NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in California. As skies clear over the area, the team will leverage NASA's constellation of Earth observing satellites -- including the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) aboard Terra, Landsat, and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite -- to assist with flood mapping, and in the case of Suomi-NPP, mapping of utility and power outages through a reduction in emitted night lights. ASTER's U.S. Science Team is located at JPL. Beyond the technical assistance and scientific expertise the agency is providing, NASA is working to ensure the continued safety of its employees and their families in the path of the storm, communicating closely with the recovery team at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston, which continues to assess conditions onsite in an effort to ensure a smooth transition back to normal operations once the center re-opens next week. | UNE ÉPOPÉE DANS LA MESURE DU POSSIBLE GRÂCE AUX DONNÉES ET INFORMATIONS TRANSMISE PAR VOYAGER I ET II. ECRIT DU CITOYEN TIGNARD YANIS 31 August 2017 The movements of more than 300 000 stars surveyed by ESA’s Gaia satellite reveal that rare close encounters with our Sun might disturb the cloud of comets at the far reaches of our Solar System, sending some towards Earth in the distant future. As the Solar System moves through the Galaxy, and as other stars move on their own paths, close encounters are inevitable – though ‘close’ still means many trillions of kilometres. A star, depending on its mass and speed, would need to get within about 60 trillion kilometres before it starts to have an effect on the Solar System’s distant reservoir of comets, the Oort Cloud, which is thought to extend out to 15 trillion kilometres from the Sun, 100 000 times the Sun–Earth distance. For comparison, the outermost planet Neptune orbits at an average distance of about 4.5 billion kilometres, or 30 Sun–Earth distances. The gravitational influence of stars that pass near the Oort Cloud could perturb the paths of comets residing there, jolting them onto orbits that bring them in to the inner Solar System. While this is thought to be responsible for some of the comets that appear in our skies every hundred to thousand years, it also has the potential to put comets on a collision course with Earth or other planets. Understanding the past and future motions of stars is a key goal of Gaia as it collects precise data on stellar positions and motions over its five-year mission. After 14 months, the first catalogue of more than a billion stars was recently released, which included the distances and the motions across the sky for more than two million stars. By combining the new results with existing information, astronomers began a detailed, large-scale search for stars passing close to our Sun. So far, the motions relative to the Sun of more than 300 000 stars have been traced through the Galaxy and their closest approach determined for up to five million years in the past and future. Of them, 97 stars were found that will pass within 150 trillion kilometres, while 16 come within about 60 trillion km. While the 16 are considered reasonably near, a particularly close encounter of one star, Gliese 710, in 1.3 million years’ time, stands out. It is predicted to pass within just 2.3 trillion km or about 16 000 Earth–Sun distances, well within the Oort Cloud. The star is already well-documented, and thanks to the Gaia data, the estimated encounter distance has recently been revised. Previously, there was a 90% degree of certainty that it would come within 3.1–13.6 trillion kilometres. Now, the more accurate data suggest that it will come within 1.5–3.2 trillion km, with 2.3 trillion km most likely. http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Gaia/Close_encounters_of_the_stellar_kind

This image was taken in 1972 in the main control room at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre, in Darmstadt, Germany, during a VIP visit by the UK’s Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma. The centre has served as Europe’s gateway to space for half a century. In 2017, it is celebrating its 50th anniversary, highlighting a rich history of achievement in space. Since inauguration in 1967, teams have flown 77 spacecraft, ranging from telecom, weather, Earth observation and climate monitoring satellites to spacecraft studying the Sun, peering deep into our Universe and exploring our Solar System. While there’s no known connection, it cannot be entirely by chance that Hair, one of the most famous rock musicals, debuted in New York in 1967, the same year as the centre’s inauguration. | SEPTEMBER SPACE CASSINI OU SEPTEMBRE ESPACE CASSINI. Space-inspired Star Storm to premiere next month 30 August 2017 Star Storm, an explosive performance inspired by stellar processes in the Universe, will be premiered at the 2017 Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, on 10 September. The creator of the show is Aoife van Linden Tol, the recipient of the first art&science@ESA residency organised by Ars Electronica in partnership with ESA. A multimedia artist working primarily with explosive materials, Aoife spent six weeks at ESA’s technical heart in the Netherlands to research her project. During that first part of her residency, she had numerous conversations and brainstorming sessions with scientists, absorbing information about research on the composition, life cycle, magnetic behaviour and light production within stars, including our Sun. Drawing from the information she collected at ESA, Aoife designed a powerful and poetic experience with a series of explosive events. Each represents a specific phenomenon that might be taking place at any time in stars somewhere in the Universe. Lost in the photosphere by Aoife van Linden Tol “From the Big Bang to solar mass ejections and supernovas, the spacescape is alive with explosions,” says Aoife. In the second part of her residency, spent at Ars Electronica’s Futurelab, the artist tested all the techniques needed for the show. “The last 12 months have been a wonderful opportunity and a life-changing experience. It has not only allowed me deep research and inspiration to develop an ambitious and seemingly impossible idea, but also enriched my artistic practice and sparked a keen interest in engaging with the development of space culture.” Star Storm aims to create a unique and lasting experience, providing spectators with insights into the nature of our Universe and their own place within it. This year’s Ars Electronica Festival, on 7–11 September, is dedicated to the theme of artificial intelligence. Another highlight will be kinetic artist and roboticist Sarah Petkus, who was awarded an honorary mention by the jury of the art&science @ESA residency and who also spent three weeks at ESA in the Netherlands. There, exploring aspects of robotic exploration in space, Sarah used her robot, NoodleFeet, to catalyse interactions with scientists and engineers from ESA’s robotic laboratories. Sarah Petkus with NoodleFeet at ESA Her project, The Wandering Artist, ponders the possibilities of a space probe that would visit another planet and take decisions based on creative grounds, rather than purely scientific reasoning. “It was exciting to discover and define new points of overlap between my robotic creations and the scientific instruments they are inspired by,” says Sarah. “The residency has shone light on the true and sometimes overlooked elements of humanity present in space exploration, and has helped me think critically about how we relate to the technology we create.” http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Space-inspired_Star_Storm_to_premiere_next_month

| A SLICE OF HUBBLE. SEPTEMBER SPACE CASSINI. Y'BECCA. TAY Title Section of Hubble solar wing Released 30/08/2017 2:07 pm Copyright ESA–G. Porter, CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO Description A deceptively valuable wall hanging: this section of the NASA–ESA Hubble Space Telescope’s solar array flew for eight years in space before being returned to Earth aboard a Space Shuttle, and is now displayed at ESA’s technical centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. See it for yourself at ESA’s Open Day in the Netherlands on Sunday 8 October. The theme this year is Bringing Space to Earth, focussing on knowledge, hardware and people returned to the ground from space. VIP guests for the Open Day have been confirmed: astronauts Michael Foale of the UK, Dumitru Prunariu of Romania, Ulf Merbold and Ernst Messerschmid of Germany, Dirk Frimout of Belgium, Jean-Jacques Favier and Claudie Haigneré of France and André Kuipers of the Netherlands. More than 9200 people have already registered to attend the event; you can sign up here. Forty years ago this year NASA and ESA agreed to be partners on the Hubble Space Telescope, which was launched into orbit on 24 April 1990. ESA provided the first two generations of solar wings for Hubble, replaced and returned during later servicing missions. ESA’s solar power engineers had the valuable opportunity to study how solar arrays degraded in the space environment. Today, Hubble is powered by US-made solar wings, but they are kept trained on the Sun by the original European drive mechanisms. | MONOTIRING AIR QUALITY. SEPTEMBER SPACE CASSINI. Y'BECCA. TAY Sentinel-5P http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Sentinel-5PESA is developing a new family of missions called Sentinels specifically for the operational needs of the Copernicus programme. Each Sentinel mission is based on a constellation of two satellites to fulfil revisit and coverage requirements, providing robust datasets for Copernicus Services. These missions carry a range of technologies, such as radar and multi-spectral imaging instruments for land, ocean and atmospheric monitoring: Sentinel-1 is a polar-orbiting, all-weather, day-and-night radar imaging mission for land and ocean services. Sentinel-1A was launched on 3 April 2014 and Sentinel-1B on 25 April 2016. Both were taken into orbit on a Soyuz rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. Sentinel-2 is a polar-orbiting, multispectral high-resolution imaging mission for land monitoring to provide, for example, imagery of vegetation, soil and water cover, inland waterways and coastal areas. Sentinel-2 can also deliver information for emergency services. Sentinel-2A was launched on 23 June 2015 and Sentinel-2B followed on 7 March 2017. Sentinel family Sentinel-3 is a multi-instrument mission to measure sea-surface topography, sea- and land-surface temperature, ocean colour and land colour with high-end accuracy and reliability. The mission will support ocean forecasting systems, as well as environmental and climate monitoring. Sentinel-3A was launched on 16 February 2016. Sentinel-5 Precursor – also known as Sentinel-5P – is the forerunner of Sentinel-5 to provide timely data on a multitude of trace gases and aerosols affecting air quality and climate. It was developed to reduce data gaps between the Envisat satellite – in particular the Sciamachy instrument – and the launch of Sentinel-5. Sentinel-4 is a payload devoted to atmospheric monitoring that will be embarked upon a Meteosat Third Generation-Sounder (MTG-S) satellite in geostationary orbit. Sentinel-5 is a payload that will monitor the atmosphere from polar orbit aboard a MetOp Second Generation satellite. Sentinel-6 carries a radar altimeter to measure global sea-surface height, primarily for operational oceanography and for climate studies. http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Overview420 July 2017 With Sentinel-5 Precursor about to be packed up and shipped to Russia for liftoff in late September, media representatives, members of the UK Space Agency and National Centre for Earth Observation had the chance to see this Copernicus air-pollution monitoring satellite standing proud in the cleanroom. Sentinel-5 Precursor – also known as Sentinel-5P – is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere. It has been built to map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane that affect air quality. The satellite will help to identify pollution hotspots where public health could be at risk. It will also contribute to services that warn of high levels of UV radiation, which can cause skin cancer, and volcanic ash monitoring for aviation safety. Carrying the Tropomi instrument, the most advanced of its kind, Sentinel-5P will map the entire planet every 24 hours. The availability of accurate and up-to-date information will help decision-makers to fight air pollution and climate change. Josef Aschbacher Sentinel-5P is the forerunner of the Sentinel-5 mission to be carried on the MetOp Second Generation satellites that will be launched in a few years. Until then Sentinel-5P will deliver much needed information to monitor and track air pollution. The media event was held at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, UK, where the satellite was built and tested. ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Josef Aschbacher, said, “It’s wonderful to see the satellite in all its glory, and it’s thanks to a truly collaborative effort that it will take the EC’s Copernicus programme into a new era of atmospheric monitoring. “ESA is very grateful to the Netherlands for its substantial contribution to the Tropomi instrument. The mission as a whole was designed and built by a consortium of 30 companies under the leadership of Airbus Defence and Space.” Nico van Putten, Deputy Director of the Netherlands Space Office, added, “The development and the implementation of the top-notch Tropomi instrument for Sentinel-5P is thanks to the remarkable close cooperation between different entities from all over Europe. Bringing air pollution into focus Access the video “As a Dutch institution we are proud to contribute to this marvel of space technology, which will now help to tackle global challenges, making Europe even stronger in Earth observation.” Pepijn Veefkind from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, KNMI, added, “Every day, Tropomi will make almost 20 million observations of important air pollutants and gases affecting the climate. “KNMI will use this data to improve air-quality forecasts and to keep a close eye on emission increases or reductions, and to monitor what mitigation measures are effective in protecting the air we breathe.” Engineers will now prepare the satellite for shipment to the Plesetsk launch site in Russia. Once there it will be thoroughly tested and prepared for launch in late September. http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Sentinel-5P/Air_pollution_monitoring_Sentinel_on_show | |

Iconographie

| Hello and welcome! I'm Jane Houston Jones from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. On September 15 the Cassini spacecraft ends its glorious Saturnian science tour by plunging into the atmosphere of Saturn, becoming forever a part of the ringed planet. This month Saturn is the only prominent evening planet low in the southwest sky. Look for it near the constellation Sagittarius. Above and below Saturn--from a dark sky--you can't miss the summer Milky Way spanning the sky from northeast to southwest. Grab a pair of binoculars and scan the teapot-shaped Sagittarius, where stars and some brighter clumps appear as steam from the teapot. Those bright clumps are near the center of our galaxy, which is full of gas, dust and stars. Directly overhead is the great Summer Triangle of stars. Vega, Altair and Deneb are in the pretty constellations Lyra, Aquila and Cygnus. As you gaze toward the northeast you'll see Cassiopeia, the familiar W-shaped constellation...and Perseus. Through your binoculars, look for the Perseus Double Cluster. Both of the clusters are visible with the naked eye, are 7500 light years away, and contain more than 300 blue-white super-giant stars! Every star and every object you can see with your unaided eye is part of the Milky Way. With one exception: the great Andromeda galaxy, which is faintly visible through binoculars on the opposite side of the night sky from Saturn and the teapot. You can find out about NASA's astrophysics missions studying the universe, and all of NASA's missions at: www.nasa.govThat's all for this month. | Title Tethys Released 25/08/2017 1:58 pm Copyright NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute Description Cassini gazes across the icy rings of Saturn toward the icy moon Tethys, whose night side is illuminated by Saturnshine, or sunlight reflected by the planet. Tethys was brightened by a factor of two in this image to increase its visibility. A sliver of the moon's sunlit northern hemisphere is seen at top. A bright wedge of Saturn's sunlit side is seen at lower left. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on 13 May 2017. The view was acquired at a distance of approximately 1.2 million kilometres from Saturn. Image scale is 70 kilometres per pixel on Saturn. The distance to Tethys was about 1.5 million kilometres. The image scale on Tethys is about 90 kilometres per pixel. The Cassini Solstice Mission is a joint United States and European endeavor. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter was designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team consists of scientists from the US, England, France, and Germany. The imaging operations center and team lead (Dr. C. Porco) are based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

| At first glance, this cosmic kaleidoscope of purple, blue and pink offers a strikingly beautiful — and serene — snapshot of the cosmos. However, this multi-colored haze actually marks the site of two colliding galaxy clusters, forming a single object known as MACS J0416.1-2403 (or MACS J0416 for short). MACS J0416 is located about 4.3 billion light-years from Earth, in the constellation of Eridanus. This image of the cluster combines data from three different telescopes: the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope (showing the galaxies and stars), the NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory (diffuse emission in blue), and the NRAO Jansky Very Large Array (diffuse emission in pink). Each telescope shows a different element of the cluster, allowing astronomers to study MACS J0416 in detail. As with all galaxy clusters, MACS J0416 contains a significant amount of dark matter, which leaves a detectable imprint in visible light by distorting the images of background galaxies. In this image, this dark matter appears to align well with the blue-hued hot gas, suggesting that the two clusters have not yet collided; if the clusters had already smashed into one another, the dark matter and gas would have separated. MACS J0416 also contains other features — such as a compact core of hot gas — that would likely have been disrupted had a collision already occurred. Together with five other galaxy clusters, MACS J0416 is playing a leading role in the Hubble Frontier Fields program, for which this data was obtained. Owing to its huge mass, the cluster is in fact bending the light of background objects, acting as a magnifying lens. Astronomers can use this phenomenon to find galaxies that existed only hundreds of million years after the big bang. For more information on both Frontier Fields and the phenomenon of gravitational lensing, see Hubblecast 90: The final frontier.
