La rencontre de Nagaliew la mouette aux yeux verts et de Minouska la chatte venu de Pologne...

Toutes les deux sont des peuples de nomades venu des déserts de glaces et de sables... Mais, leur don de féminité leur permis d'acquérir le don de maternité sous divers aspect, le Naturel, l'adoption et le parrainage. Lorsque Nagaliew découvrit Minouska durant ses longs voyages, c'est durant ses séjours à Bethléem lorsque Ariel le Faucon affronter Y'asser l'iguane...

Nagaliew éssayait de radoucir le coeur du faucon devant les actes de l'iguane... Le fossé était creusé entre les deux entités mais Nagaliew et TAY La chouette effraie parlé d'un ordre de secouriste commun aux deux clans à celui de l'iguane et du faucon fut proposés Y'becca sous forme de lettres que la Poste Française et les pompiers de Toulouse ont réussi à faire parvenir aux habitants de Jérusalem et de Bethléem. Minouska était alors un bébé mais elle était lié à la curiosité de l'innocence. Cela n'avait pu échapper aux regards de Nagaliew qui sous forme de songe la fit apparaitre dans les visions nuageuses de la créativité. La chouette effraie devait gérer une lutte contre l'esclavage, le viol et la torture et par cela le faucon d'Israel et l'Iguane de la Palestine se livraient une dispute aux allures de réglements personnels et idéologiques qui aboutit à la guerre de la Terre Sainte...

Le souvenir de Nagaliew s'estompait car La mairie de Toulouse entreprit un nouveau réseau de Communication sur Ramonville Saint Agne et Toulouse: La suppression des lignes de Bus 56 et 62 depuis le cours dillon; La chouette effraie avait perdu tout état de communication et du croire ainsi lui apparu une forme de exéma qui rongea sa peau et son esprit... Nagaliew lui envoya donc Minouska la Chatte... Minouska réussit à sauver les meubles du naufrage et demanda l'aide autour d'elle. Son Courage et sa Ténacité sont exemplaire par rapport à moi, à Monsieur Pierre Tignard, Madame Denat Yvette et à vous...

Ainsi, j'ose dire en ces mots que je demande un fait, il y a La Syrie et Alep, L'Irak et la barbarie, La Colombie, Le Nigéria et ses femmes, le Yémen du peuple et sa République de Luca et tant autres de fait sur un trafic de l'esclavage, de la torture et du viol... Par Moment, j'ai failli sombrer dans les crimes du chatiments car on se laisse absorber par une volonté d'agir au plus vite mais, Dans les lueurs de l'age s'affrontent l'emploi du temps et l'espace temps, on s'arrange pour accorder des formes de privilèges à ceux qui possèdent une sorte d'identité scolaire, parentale et autres personnalités. Le mécontentement fait toujours partie de la condition humaine car les vacances peuvent être bouleverser par la maladie. ainsi, bien sur, il y aura un aigri ou une pleureuse ou une aigrie et un pleureur... O Saul, fils de... O Salomon, fils de... Chacun d'entre nous possédions une personnalité propre à la naissance mais l'aspect des choses l'amplifie ou la mets en sommeil dans notre inconscient; ainsi c'est révélé l'aspect des âmes devant les trente cinq heures... Certains volent des cantines pour leurs familles et doivent être puni de ceux qui volent pour ensuite dire qu'il joue aux robins des bois. Je ne suis pas contre Robin des Bois et c'est en cela que je suis prudent dans mes décisions de Justice. L’Éternel, La Laïque et le Laïc dans la Justice Morale et Mixte dans les sentiments...

Je reviens à Minouska, Nagaliew, à l'ordre morale des pompiers de Toulouse, aux bénevoles du sociales pour l'égalité des soins entre Humaines et Humains... Le rire de Nagaliew se fait entendre au dessus du proche orient et cette fois, je suis prêt à entendre la jalousie des tyrans sur les fous et les justes comme Diogéne qui demanda à alexandre de s'écarter de son soleil... Le référendum est une institution et en cela, il n'est jamais dit que le principe du Referendum est une forme d'émancipation envers les autorités publiques... Le Referendum est la manière la plus noble auquel une loi peut être établi: Pourtant, un jour, Louis Napoléon utilisa cette manière du suffrage universel direct qui marqua les esprits... Le Peuple ne peut pourtant nier le rôle évident que représente le referendum dans le principe civique et morale de "l'individue et de l'individu" dans le terme de Démocratie... Ce principe pourtant, peut être juste consultatif mais il permet ainsi à l'individu de se mettre en situation auquel se retrouve exposer les élu"e"s... Certains voient dans le referendum une forme de combat de coq ou de boxe, en tout cas, à l'image d'un vote électif, il est un aspect fondamentale d'une cohésion morale auquel la démocratie doit faire face: Il surpasse l'aspect de l'état et sans le remettre en cause, il est capable de pointer certaines choses de la vie quotidienne. Dans certains pays, il y a l'aspect de pétition qui peuvent être soumise au suffrage universel indirect... Le suffrage universel direct auquel appartient le Référendum est un aspect essentiel du caractère humain auquel un peuple veut s'adresse envers ses nouvelles générations... Le fait de débattre est un outil essentiel en terme de communication et pourtant dans certains cas, la question du Référendum relève de l'intérêt de l'état régalien, c'est en cela que certains hésitent sur son aspect même mais il montre l'aspect même de l'interlocuteur qui propose le sujet de la question. Le référendum est une loi d'utopie qui pourtant montre l'aspect réel de l'individu dans la société: En cela, j'accorde une importance réelle dans la constitution de Y'becca et des Républiques d'Israël et de la Palestine ainsi que dans toutes les Nations Morales et Physiques pour une reconnaissance morale et intellectuel dans le référendum: Son vote est lié malheureusement à des disputes entre des élu"e"s du Suffrage universel indirect... Toutefois, tout comme le vote direct du parlement et tout vote indirect du parlement, le référendum ne peut être organiser pour un Conflits d’intérêts et en cela, c'est au pouvoir judiciaire et à ses membres qu'il soit public et privé tout en maintenant et mettant l'aspect du service public militaire et civil dans la lutte contre les Conflits d’intérêts qui pourrait s'ingérer dans la teneur du débat et du vote: L'aspect du Général, de la société et l'individu doit être soulever en soulevant toutes les égalités et inégalités que peuvent engendrer le référendum... Certains peuvent s'amuser à créer de lois et des référendum pour des Conflits d’intérêts, pour créer des désordres et par gloire personnel... Cela n'est pas dans l'intérêt de l'harmonie sereine auquel nous devons être en ces situations profondes de changement de climat: "De jour en jour; le petit Nuage de Magellan et La Galaxie d'Andromède évolue depuis µ Êta Careme" s'écrie Nagaliew la mouette aux yeux verts..."

While a fire at a rubbish depot was detected from space by the Copernicus Sentinel-3A and ESA’s Proba-V satellites, pollutants in the plume of thick smoke were measured by instruments that will be used to validate information from the upcoming Sentinel-5 Precursor mission.

The fire broke out on 5 May in Pomezia, a town 50 km south of Rome in Italy. It burned for two days.

The smouldering rubbish, which included plastics, sent a toxic cloud into the sky forcing homes and schools in the area to be evacuated.
Rise in nitrogen dioxide

Remote-sensing instruments that are being used for ESA projects revealed that smoke from the fire drifted over Rome.

In particular, readings from two Pandora instruments at separate sites showed that there was a considerable increase in concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde.

These two air pollutants can be a potential health risk.

Nitrogen dioxide, which normally pollutes the air as a result of road traffic and other fossil fuel combustion, can contribute to respiratory problems.
Pandora 117

Formaldehyde is an important intermediate gas in the oxidation of methane and other hydrocarbons. While its lifetime in the air is short, it can react chemically to become a source of carbon monoxide, which when breathed can reduce the amount of oxygen that can be transported in the blood stream.

One of the Pandora instruments, number 115, is positioned at the Institute of Atmospheric Science and Climate in a semi-rural location, while Pandora number 117 is at Sapienza University’s Department of Physics near the centre of Rome.

They are both part of a suite of atmospheric remote-sensing instruments – the Boundary layer Air Quality-analysis Using Networks of Instruments (BAQUNIN) – which is funded by ESA for atmospheric composition calibration and validation.
Fire seen by Sentinel-3A

While the fire was a rather shocking incident for locals and one that was clearly a cause for concern with respect to both safety and air pollution, the fact that pollutants were measured accurately by these instruments demonstrated that the instrument set is providing high quality and important information on air quality in the Rome area.

Moreover, this facility will be important in verifying that the upcoming Sentinel-5 Precursor mission is delivering accurate data on air quality.
Sentinel-5P

Scheduled to launch later this year, Sentinel-5 Precursor, or Sentinel-5P for short, is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere. This new satellite carries the state-of-the-art Tropomi instrument to map a multitude of trace gases and aerosols that affect air quality and our climate.

The mission will also identify pollution hotspots where public health could be at risk.

What sets Tropomi apart is that it measures from the ultraviolet to the shortwave infrared imaging a wide range of pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, methane and carbon monoxide more accurately than ever before. With a resolution as high as 7 x 3.5 km, Sentinel-5P has the potential to detect air pollution over individual cities.
Fire captured by Proba-V

Satellite data such as these are used in combination with in situ air-quality measurements in computer models that can help governments and decision-makers develop mitigation strategies to improve air quality.

Smoke from the fire was also captured from space by the Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite and the Proba-V satellite.

Residents of Earth’s northern hemisphere enjoyed the greatest number of daylight hours in a single day all year on 21 June 2017. This summer solstice occurs when the tilt of Earth’s axis is most inclined towards the Sun, which sits directly over the Tropic of Cancer.

The ESA/NASA SOHO solar observatory provided an alternative view. It has been staring at the Sun since 1995, studying its interior, monitoring its surface and stormy atmosphere, and how the ‘solar wind’ blows through the Solar System.

The montage of images shows SOHO’s view of the Sun at different ultraviolet wavelengths in the early morning of 21 June, corresponding to solar material at a range of temperatures.

From left to right, the brightest material in each image corresponds to temperatures of 60 000–80 000ºC, 1 million, 1.5 million and 2 million degrees respectively. The higher the temperature, the higher you are looking in the solar atmosphere. The hottest areas appear brighter, while the darker regions are relatively cooler.

Back on Earth, the Sun is now beginning to trace a lower path through the sky each day. Winter solstice occurs in six months’ time, 21 December, when Earth’s axis is tilted furthest away from the Sun. With the Sun directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, this results in the shortest number of daylight hours in the northern hemisphere. The situation is reversed for the southern hemisphere, where 21 June marks the winter solstice, and 21 December the summer solstice.

Remember: never look directly at the Sun!

Tjekou ou Per-Atoum, en hébreu Pithôm de l'égyptien pr-'itm -la maison du dieu Atoum-, en grec Heroon-polis ou Héroopolis, aujourd'hui Tell er-Retabeh dans l'oued Tumilat, était la capitale du huitième nome de Basse-Égypte.

Pithôm du Livre de l'Exode

C'est grâce à des stèles et des temples dédiés à Atoum qu'Henri Édouard Naville a identifié au XIXe siècle Tell el-Mashkuteh (« la butte des idoles »), comme étant Pithôm, une des deux cités pharaoniques dans lesquelles les Hébreux furent, selon l'Exode, obligés de fabriquer des briques.

De plus récentes découvertes identifient plutôt ce site comme étant Tjekou, capitale du huitième nome de Basse-Égypte, une étape sur la route commerciale reliant les lacs Amers et l'isthme de Suez à la ville de Péluse, sur la pointe est du delta du Nil. Bien que conventionnellement admise, la localisation de Pithôm à Tell el-Maskhouta ne fait pas l'unanimité. L'égyptologue Kenneth Anderson Kitchen localise le site au Tell el-Retabeh (connu aussi sous l'orthographe Tell er-Retabah, Tell er-Rebata, ou Tell el-Retaba)1.

Quoi qu'il en soit, de nombreux vestiges de l'époque ramesside ont été découverts à Tell el-Maskhouta. En 1883, Naville a dégagé une enceinte en brique de 210 m de côté ainsi que les restes d'un temple. Les fouilles menées sur le site révélèrent la présence de nombreux monuments au nom de Ramsès II. Des statues, des stèles et des sphinx datant du règne de ce grand pharaon ont été mis au jour notamment par un agent de Ferdinand de Lesseps (ils sont aujourd'hui exposés au jardin des Stèles à Ismaïlia). Des traces d'occupation plus anciennes ont été également retrouvées sur place. En 1860, Auguste Mariette y a notamment exhumé l'inscription d'un certain Ouni, personnage officiel sous le règne de Mérenrê (VIe dynastie), chargé de protéger cette région frontalière des incursions des « habitants des sables ». Ce village fut occupé par les Hyksos, puis abandonné, ne redevenant une ville qu'au VIIe siècle av. J.-C. (Dynastie saïte), époque à laquelle on trouve un temple d'Atoum. L'historien grec Hérodote mentionne que ce site, qu'il nomme Πάτουµος est situé sur le trajet du canal des pharaons sur lequel des travaux sont entrepris vers 600 av. J.-C. par Nékao II2.

Virginia Stoddert Moore

Virginia Stoddert Moore served in World War 1 with the United States Navy. The dates of service are: Known 6/12/1918 to 4/17/1919.

My grandmother, Virginia Stoddert Moore, of Chicago, Ill, b. April 24, 1896, d. March 8, 1982, Service No. 145-64-22, volunteered to join the U S Navy and enlisted on June 12, 1918, at Great Lakes, IL, as a Yeoman First Class.

She was called to active duty, to "volunteer for general service and agree to any assignment to duty on the high seas or to service in any foreign coutnry." Capt Moffett, then Commander of the base there, is recorded as saying she was the "first" there. (Please see attached article.)

Virginia stated she felt like she was the first because of her status as a volunteer, when the first and subsequent women had been 'taken in', or 'conscripted' as secretaries. History records otherwise, I'm afraid.

She was assigned to a ship the USS Triton at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., June 20, 1918, then to the Public Works Office January 29, 1919, and then transferred to the Navy Department in D.C. on January 29, 1918. She was assigned to Josephus Danials, SECNAV, and also the F.D.R, Assistant SECNAV at Naval Communication, R1210, South Bldg, according to her story, earning $44.00 per month salary, and worked as a Stenographer.

She is described in her naval service record as being 22 years, 2 months old when she joined, had dark brown hair with blue eyes. She was 5'3.5" and weighed 98 pounds, with moles on her right wrist and lower lumbar region of which I share. She told a tale that they had to make their own uniforms (she had been issued a uniform gratuity in the amount of $60.00) and one day desired to look more fashionable by fastening a fox stole around her shoulders. She did so with other Yeomanettes and they were subsequently arrested for uniform infraction and placed in the brig on base. A short time later, Philip Sousa's Marine Corps band came to serenade them while behind bars. P. Sousa was stationed there at the time and was in charge of the band.

Another newspaper clipping attached tells the story of Virginia being interviewed by the Chicago Tribune, and then a 2nd article where the paper takes credit for "a love match" between Virginia and her first husband Mr. Grotte of New Mexico, an Army Sgt at the time. They were married in Sept of 1918 and divorced in July 1929. On October 25, 1918, Virginia was investigated for being absent and was discovered at the Georgetown Hospital in D.C., on October 8, 1918, suffering from influenza (Spanish Flu) and was able to return to work the following Monday.

Beginning in January 1919, Virginia began to complain of increasing nervousness and cardio palpitation and had a small goiter, of which she refused operation to remove. She was subsequently diagnosed with a heart murmur resulting from her bout with the flu and given a recorded "Good (Disability)" discharge on April 19, 1919. She applied for a medical pension on December 31, 1927 and began receiving $245.00 monthly thereafter and until her death in 1982. Her death was also mentioned in the All Hands Magazine, March 1982 and her obituary was printing in the LA Times that month and year also.

My father, John Garth Stoddert Perrot was interviewed by Naval "Ship to Shore" radio at that time as well, where they mention her being the first woman to volunteer. Virginia Stoddert Moore is a direct descendant of Benjamin Stoddert, first SECNAV of this country, 1798 to 1801, under Presidents Jefferson and Adams, and never took a pension for his service. He was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine, served as a major in the Revolution, campaigned for the annexation of Canada, which he changed his name to Benjamin Canada Stoddert during his campaigning for it, was a successful shipping merchant and businessman in Georgetown, D.C. and a pall bearer for George Washington. He is considered a Founding Father as he was instrumental in securing the land of what is now Washington, D.C.

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity took the component images of this enhanced-color scene during the mission's "walkabout" survey of an area just above the top of "Perseverance Valley," in preparation for driving down the valley.

The location is just outside the crest line of the western rim of Endeavour Crater, looking toward the northwest. The rim crest at the top of Perseverance Valley is off the scene to the right. A swath across the top half of the image is lined with dark rocks, especially on the far side. The swath runs east-west, and one possible history under investigation is that it was a channel into a lake perched against the edge of the crater billions of years ago. Another hypothesis is that the linear pattern of the rock piles is related to radial fractures from the impact that excavated Endeavour Crater. One goal of the walkabout is to determine whether a close look at the rocks will provide clues to the history of the site.

For scale, the width of the swath near the center of the image is roughly 30 feet (9 meters).

Opportunity's panoramic camera (Pancam) recorded this scene on June 3, 2017, during the 4,749th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's work on Mars. The enhanced color helps make differences in surface materials visible. The view merges exposures taken through three of the Pancam's color filters, centered on wavelengths of 753 nanometers (near-infrared), 535 nanometers (green) and 432 nanometers (violet).

Opportunity and the next-generation Mars rover, Curiosity, plus three active NASA Mars orbiters are part of ambitious robotic exploration to understand Mars, which will continue with NASA missions to be launched in 2018 and 2020. The robotic missions help lead the way for sending humans to Mars in the 2030s. NASA's senior Mars rover, Opportunity, is examining rocks at the edge of Endeavour Crater for signs that they may have been either transported by a flood or eroded in place by wind.

Those scenarios are among the possible explanations rover-team scientists are considering for features seen just outside the crater rim's crest above "Perseverance Valley," which is carved into the inner slope of the rim.

The team plans to drive Opportunity down Perseverance Valley after completing a "walkabout" survey of the area above it. The rover's drives now use steering motors on only the rear wheels, following a temporary jam of the left-front wheel's steering actuator this month. Opportunity has not used its right-front wheel's steering actuator since 2005, the year after it landed on Mars.

The mission has been investigating sites on and near the western rim of Endeavour Crater since 2011. The crater is about 14 miles (22 kilometers) across.

"The walkabout is designed to look at what's just above Perseverance Valley," said Opportunity Deputy Principal Investigator Ray Arvidson of Washington University in St. Louis. "We see a pattern of striations running east-west outside the crest of the rim."

A portion of the crest at the top of Perseverance Valley has a broad notch. Just west of that, elongated patches of rocks line the sides of a slightly depressed, east-west swath of ground, which might have been a drainage channel billions of years ago.

"We want to determine whether these are in-place rocks or transported rocks," Arvidson said. "One possibility is that this site was the end of a catchment where a lake was perched against the outside of the crater rim. A flood might have brought in the rocks, breached the rim and overflowed into the crater, carving the valley down the inner side of the rim. Another possibility is that the area was fractured by the impact that created Endeavour Crater, then rock dikes filled the fractures, and we're seeing effects of wind erosion on those filled fractures."

In the hypothesis of a perched lake, the notch in the crest just above Perseverance Valley may have been a spillway. Weighing against that hypothesis is an observation that the ground west of the crest slopes away, not toward the crater. The science team is considering possible explanations for how the slope might have changed.

A variation of the impact-fracture hypothesis is that water rising from underground could have favored the fractures as paths to the surface and contributed to weathering of the fracture-filling rocks.

Close examination of the rock piles along the edges of the possible channel might help researchers evaluate these and other possible histories of the site. Meanwhile, the team is analyzing stereo images of Perseverance Valley, taken from the rim, to plot Opportunity's route. The valley extends down from the crest into the crater at a slope of about 15 to 17 degrees for a distance of about two football fields.

On June 4, during the walkabout survey, the steering actuator for Opportunity's left-front wheel stalled with the wheel turned outward more than 30 degrees. Each of the rover's six wheels has its own drive motor, which all still work after about 27.9 miles (44.9 kilometers) of driving on Mars. Each of the four corner wheels also has an independent steering actuator -- including motor and gearbox. The rover has driven about 25 miles (40 kilometers) since losing use of right-front wheel steering in April 2005.

Diagnostic testing on June 17 succeeded in straightening out the left-front wheel, a more favorable orientation than it had been in for nearly two weeks.

"For at least the immediate future, we don't plan to use either front wheel for steering," said Opportunity Project Manager John Callas of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. "We can steer with two wheels, just like a car except it's the rear wheels. We're doing exactly what we should be doing, which is to wear out the rover doing productive work -- to utilize every capability of the vehicle in the exploration of Mars."

The team has operated Opportunity on Mars for more than 50 times longer than the originally planned mission duration of three months.

Last year was the hottest on record, Arctic sea ice is on the decline and sea levels continue to rise. In this context, satellites are providing us with an unbiased view of how our climate is changing and the effects it is having on our planet.

Estimates show that the global sea level is rising by about 3 mm a year. This is one of the major threats of global warming, especially for low-lying coastal areas.

Identifying the individual contributors to sea-level rise is a complicated challenge in climate science. Earth-observing satellites are mapping sea-level changes, which vary across the globe, but the data from satellites can also be used to quantify the amount of water coming from various sources such as melting glaciers and ice sheets, as well as the thermal expansion of ocean water due to rising temperatures.
Carbon dioxide increase

Space’s role in monitoring our planet doesn’t stop there: from greenhouse gas emissions to ozone, sea ice to soil moisture and more, spaceborne instruments provide us with the independent and scientific facts which show that our climate is changing.

“Climate and Earth system science are essential to position countries at the forefront of the green revolution,” said Josef Aschbacher, Director of ESA’s Earth Observation Programmes.

“Space-based Earth observation plays an increasingly important role given the satellites' global reach with the same monitoring instruments. Europe is committed to contribute to a better understanding of planet Earth and to its preservation.”

The global, consistent coverage that satellite data provide is ideal for the type of research undertaken by climate scientists. But the long-term series of data needed by climate scientists –30 years or more – is significantly longer than the lifetime of satellite missions.

Comparing data acquired by different satellites is complicated as technology is constantly improving and there are often gaps in the data between satellite missions. To overcome this, ESA created the Climate Change Initiative, or CCI, which integrates datasets derived from different Earth-observing missions to produce the most comprehensive global, long-term records possible for each factor influencing Earth at large – called Essential Climate Variables.

These datasets show clear evidence of changes to our climate.

Amy Johnson est une aviatrice pionnière anglaise née le 1er juillet 1903 à Kingston-upon-Hull (Royaume-Uni) et morte accidentellement le 5 janvier 1941 dans l'estuaire de la Tamise.

Biographie

Amy Johnson naît le 1er juillet 1903 à Kingston-upon-Hull dans le Yorkshire. Elle obtient un baccalauréat en économie à l’université de Sheffield. Elle travaille ensuite à Londres comme secrétaire dans un cabinet d’avocat. Elle commence à voler sous forme de passe-temps, obtenant la licence « A » le 6 juillet 1929 sous la tutelle du capitaine Valentine Baker. Au cours de cette même année, elle devient la première Britannique à obtenir une licence de mécanicienne au sol.

Son père, qui fut toujours son plus fidèle partisan, l'aide à acquérir son premier avion. Grâce à lui et à Lord Wakefield, elle achète d’occasion un de Havilland Gipsy Moth qu'elle baptise « Jason » en guise d'hommage à l’entreprise de son père.

La célébrité

Amy Johnson atteint une renommée mondiale quand, en 1930, elle devient la première femme à effectuer un vol solo entre le Royaume-Uni et l'Australie. À bord de son Gipsy Moth, elle quitte Croydon, au sud de Londres, le 5 mai et atterrit à Port Darwin le 24 mai après avoir volé 19 110 km. Son avion peut encore être admiré au Science Museum de Londres.

En juillet 1931, Amy Johnson et son copilote Jack Humphreys sont les premiers à effectuer un vol de Londres à Moscou en une seule journée, parcourant à bord d’un de Havilland 80A Puss Moth les 2 830 km en environ 21 heures. De là, ils poursuivent leur route à travers la Sibérie jusqu’à Tokyo, établissant un record de vitesse entre le Royaume-Uni et le Japon (au même moment, Marga von Etzdorf réalise le premier vol féminin en solitaire entre l'Allemagne et le Japon).

Le 29 juillet 1932, Amy Johnson épouse le célèbre aviateur Jim Mollison avec qui elle partage un esprit de compétition acéré.

Quatre mois après leur mariage, le 18 novembre 1932, à bord d’un DH.80A Puss Moth (en) de 105 chevaux, baptisé « Desert Cloud », Amy bat le record de son mari (quatre jours, dix-sept heures et vingt-deux minutes) sur le vol Londres - Le Cap, en Afrique du Sud, soit 10 046 kilomètres de parcourus en quatre jours, six heures et cinquante-trois minutes, avec 5 escales1.

En juin 1933, au départ de Pendine Sands (en) au Pays de Galles, elle franchit l’Atlantique avec son mari aux commandes d’un de Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide. À court d’essence, ils doivent se poser en catastrophe à Bridgeport dans le Connecticut, et sont légèrement blessés. Néanmoins, ils sont fêtés par la population new-yorkaise par le biais d’une parade près de Wall Street.

En octobre 1934, dans le cadre de la course aérienne Londres-Melbourne, le couple effectue un vol de 22 heures vers Karachi à bord du DH.88 Comet baptisé Black Magic. Ils sont cependant contraints d’abandonner la course et de se poser à Allahabad en raison d’ennuis mécaniques.

En mai 1936, à bord d’un Percival Gull Six, Amy réalise un vol solo aller-retour Le Cap en quatre jours, six heures et quarante minutes.

En 1938, Amy Johnson et Jim Mollison divorcent. Elle reprend alors son nom de jeune fille.

La mort d’Amelia Earhart en 1937 marque profondément Amy qui devient pilote de convoyage à Portsmouth et fait quelques courses automobiles.

Seconde Guerre mondiale

Au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Amy rejoint l’ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) où elle convoie des avions neufs depuis leur usine de montage jusqu’aux bases de combat de la Royal Air Force.
Décès

Le 5 janvier 1941, dans des conditions météorologiques défavorables, le bimoteur Airspeed Oxford MK.II qu’elle convoie depuis Blackpool vers la base RAF de Kidlington près d'Oxford tombe en panne de carburant. Elle se pose dans la Tamise où elle est entrevue vivante par le Lt Cdr Walter Fletcher du HMS Haslemere qui tente de la sauver. Ils se noient tous les deux. Le corps d’Amy ne fut jamais retrouvé.

Une cérémonie commémorative eut lieu dans l'église de St Martin-in-the-Fields le 14 janvier 1941.

Les circonstances exactes de sa mort sont cependant sujettes à interrogations. Il se pourrait qu’elle ait été abattue par la défense anglaise à la suite d'une erreur de sa part dans l’énoncé du code d’identification de son vol.

Le musée de l'Air et de l'Espace du Bourget a donné une exposition "Amy Johnson - le destin d'une héroïne" du 17 mai au 31 août 2014.

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity recorded a panoramic view
before entering the upper end of a fluid-carved valley that descends
the inner slope of a large crater's rim.

The scene includes a broad notch in the crest of the crater's rim,
which may have been a spillway where water or ice or wind flowed over
the rim and into the crater. Wheel tracks visible in the area of the notch
were left by Opportunity as the rover studied the ground there and
took images into the valley below for use in planning its route.

"It is a tantalizing scene," said Opportunity Deputy Principal Investigator
Ray Arvidson of Washington University in St. Louis.
"You can see what appear to be channels lined by boulders,
and the putative spillway at the top of Perseverance Valley.
We have not ruled out any of the possibilities of water, ice
or wind being responsible."

Opportunity's panoramic camera (Pancam) took the component images
of the scene during a two-week driving moratorium in June 2017
while rover engineers diagnosed a temporary stall in the left-front
wheel's steering actuator. The wheel was pointed outward more
than 30 degrees, prompting the team to call the resulting vista Pancam's
"Sprained Ankle" panorama. Both ends of the scene show portions
of Endeavour Crater's western rim, extending north and south,
and the center of the scene shows terrain just
outside the crater.

The team was able to straighten the wheel to point straight ahead,
and now uses the steering capability of only the two rear wheels.
The right-front wheel's steering actuator has been disabled
since 2006. Opportunity has driven 27.95 miles (44.97 kilometers)
since landing on Mars in 2004.

On July 7, 2017, Opportunity drove to the site within upper
Perseverance Valley where it will spend about three weeks
without driving while Mars passes nearly behind the sun from
Earth's perspective, affecting radio communications.
The rover's current location is just out of sight
in the Sprained Ankle panorama, below the possible spillway.
Opportunity is using Pancam to record another grand view
from this location.

After full communications resume in early August, the team
plans to drive Opportunity farther down Perseverance Valley,
seeking to learn more about the process that carved it.

With Sentinel-5 Precursor about to be packed up and shipped
to Russia for liftoff in late September, media representatives,
members of the UK Space Agency and National Centre
for Earth Observation had the chance to see this Copernicus
air-pollution monitoring satellite standing proud in the cleanroom.

Sentinel-5 Precursor – also known as Sentinel-5P
– is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring
our atmosphere.

It has been built to map a multitude of trace gases such as
nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane that
affect air quality.

The satellite will help to identify pollution hotspots
where public health could be at risk. It will also contribute
to services that warn of high levels of UV radiation,
which can cause skin cancer, and volcanic ash
monitoring for aviation safety.

Carrying the Tropomi instrument, the most advanced
of its kind, Sentinel-5P will map the entire planet every 24 hours.
The availability of accurate and up-to-date information will help
decision-makers to fight air pollution and climate change.

Sentinel-5P is the forerunner of the Sentinel-5 mission
to be carried on the MetOp Second Generation satellites
that will be launched in a few years. Until then Sentinel-5P
will deliver much needed information to monitor
and track air pollution.

The media event was held at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage,
UK, where the satellite was built and tested.

ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Josef Aschbacher,
said, “It’s wonderful to see the satellite in all its glory,
and it’s thanks to a truly collaborative effort that it will take
the EC’s Copernicus programme into a new era
of atmospheric monitoring.

“ESA is very grateful to the Netherlands for its substantial contribution
to the Tropomi instrument. The mission as a whole was designed
and built by a consortium of 30 companies under the leadership
of Airbus Defence and Space.”

Nico van Putten, Deputy Director of the Netherlands Space Office,
added, “The development and the implementation
of the top-notch Tropomi instrument for Sentinel-5P
is thanks to the remarkable close cooperation between
different entities from all over Europe.

“As a Dutch institution we are proud to contribute to this marvel
of space technology, which will now help to tackle global challenges,
making Europe even stronger in Earth observation.”

Pepijn Veefkind from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute,
KNMI, added, “Every day, Tropomi will make almost 20 million observations
of important air pollutants and gases affecting the climate.

“KNMI will use this data to improve air-quality forecasts and to keep
a close eye on emission increases or reductions, and to monitor
what mitigation measures are effective in protecting
the air we breathe.”

Engineers will now prepare the satellite for shipment
to the Plesetsk launch site in Russia. Once there it will be
thoroughly tested and prepared for launch in late September.

Impacts of climate on past, present, and future fire regimes in Alaskan boreal forest and tundra ecosystems

Understanding how fire regimes may respond to climate change is
a key priority for Alaskan fire and resource managers. Statistical models
play an important role in developing this understanding, helping project
the timing and location of future fire-regime changes.
However, future projections are accompanied by significant
sources of uncertainty, particularly related to the calibration
of statistical models with data spanning a short observational record
(e.g., 60 yr). The goal of this project was to evaluate the ability
of statistical models to predict outside the observational record,
and thus identify key strengths and limitations when applying statistical
models to predict fire activity under scenarios of 21st-century climate change.

Key Findings

Climate is a dominant control of fire activity in Alaskan boreal forest
and tundra ecosystems: spatial variability in climate can explain much
of the variability in modern fire activity. The relationship between climate
and fire is strongly nonlinear, with the likelihood of a fire occurring
within a 30-yr period much higher where mean July temperatures exceed 13.4 °C.
Under a range of 21st-century climate-change scenarios,
Alaskan ecosystems are projected to become increasingly conducive
to burning. The magnitude of change will vary across space
and throughout time, largely depending on the proximity
of a region to the temperature threshold to burning.
In particular, tundra and forest-tundra ecosystems may be particularly
vulnerable to climatically induced changes in fire activity,
with some regions projected to experience novel fire regimes relative
to the past 6000-32000 yr.
Applying statistical models outside of the observational record,
as done here for the past millennium (850-1850 CE), reveals important
limitations and sources of uncertainty; projections are particularly sensitive
to any data inaccuracies when predicting fire activity for regions
near climatic thresholds.

FON 2 - Graduate Research Innovation (GRIN) Award

In partnership with the Association for Fire Ecology, the Joint Fire
Science Program (JFSP) will likely continue
the Graduate Research Innovation (GRIN) program
for current master and doctoral students in the field
of wildland fire and related physical, biological, and social sciences.
The purpose of these awards is to enhance student exposure
to the management and policy relevance of their research.
As a result, these awards will enable graduate students
to conduct research that will supplement and enhance
the quality, scope, or applicability of their thesis or dissertation
to develop information and products useful to managers
and decision-makers.

Proposals must describe new, unfunded work that extends
ongoing or planned research that is the subject of a thesis
or dissertation that has been approved by the graduate student’s
advisory committee. Proposals must be directly related to the mission
and goals of JFSP to be considered, and they must address management-
or policy-related questions related to one or more of the following general
topic areas: fuels management and fire behavior, emissions and air quality,
fire effects and post-fire recovery, relative impacts of prescribed fire versus wildfire,
or human dimensions of fire.

FON 3 - Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment (FASMEE)

The Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP), in partnership with
the Department of Defense, Environmental Security Technology
Certification Program (ESTCP), has completed planning
for the Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment (FASMEE; Phase 1).
It is anticipated that the JFSP September 2017
FON will include an open solicitation for proposals
to participate in Phase 2—data collection, data archival,
and initial model evaluation—of FASMEE. In brief, this experiment
is being designed as a large-scale, interagency effort to (1)
identify the critical measurements necessary to improve operational
wildland fire and smoke prediction systems, (2) collect observations
through coordinated field campaigns, and (3) use these measures
and observations to advance science and modeling capabilities
and utility to end users. FASMEE is aimed at modeling systems
in operational use today as well as the next generation
of modeling systems expected to become operationally
useful in the next five to 10 years.

The FASMEE field campaigns are anticipated to be conducted
as large operational prescribed fires targeting (1) heavier fuel
loads and high-intensity fires, (2) large fires capable of producing
significant atmospheric plume dynamics and a substantial downwind
smoke plume, and (3) where possible (particularly in the West),
free-running fire. Candidate sites include the Fishlake National Forest
in Utah, North Kaibab Ranger District in Arizona, Fort Stewart
in Georgia, and Savannah River Site in South Carolina. Research
burns are planned for ignition no earlier than late summer 2019
and no later than early spring 2022. Depending on total funding
availability, four or more burns are planned.

La Lune pourrait contenir d'importantes ressources en eau

Selon une étude d'universitaires américains publiée ce lundi, des images satellites suggèrent que l'intérieur de l'écorce lunaire est riche en eau. Une découverte prometteuse pour l'avenir des explorations de notre satellite naturel.

Quarante-huit ans après que l'Homme a posé son premier pied sur la Lune, notre satellite naturel continue de dévoiler ses secrets au compte-gouttes. Une étude américaine, réalisée par des scientifiques de la Brown University de Providence et publiée ce lundi dans Nature Geoscience, conclut que les entrailles de la Lune regorgent d'eau, comme le note Space.com.
Un manteau de la Lune mouillé?

Pour parvenir à cette conclusion, les universitaires ont analysé les images satellites captées par l'instrument de cartographie minéralogique de la Lune (Moon Mineralogy Mapper instrument). Sur celles-ci, les savants ont repéré des dépôts pyroclastiques, c'est-à-dire les reliquats de pierres brisées par la lave, remontés des profondeurs de l'astre vers sa surface. Les experts ont isolé l'énergie thermique des zones ciblées des variations des reflets de rayons du Soleil. C'est alors qu'ils ont pu établir la présence d'eau dans ces dépôts volcaniques.

Ralph Milliken, géologue de la Brown University, a expliqué: "Notre travail montre que presque tous ces grands dépôts pyroclastiques contiennent aussi de l'eau, donc cela semble être une caractéristique commune aux magmas qui proviennent des profondeurs de l'intérieur lunaire. Ceci étant posé, la plus grande partie du manteau de la Lune pourrait bien être 'mouillé'".

Une arrivée précoce sur la Lune

Mais comment l'eau s'est-elle retrouvée à l'intérieur de la Lune? Il faut que l'eau soit apparue très tôt, avant même que la structure de la Lune ne se soit stabilisée et entièrement solidifiée. "On pense généralement que l'impact géant qui a formé la Lune était trop énergétique et trop chaud pour que l'eau puisse subsister, et pourtant c'est le cas. Une des options est que l'eau soit apparue après l'impact, mais avant que la Lune ait complètement refroidi, probablement en raison des chutes de comètes et d'astéroïdes porteurs d'eau", a poursuivi Ralph Milliken.

Selon le scientifique, cette découverte pourrait être d'une grande utilité pour de futures explorations de la Lune. Trouver de l'eau dans son sous-sol faciliterait en effet l'intendance, car transporter de l'eau dans l'espace depuis la Terre est très coûteux.
